buy this laptop for £299 - can't go wrong

http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5310WLMi_Laptop_LX.AH30X.040/version.asp

Acerdirect is the same company as http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ - buy via quidco and get a 2% rebate. I used this company last autumn for my lad's laptop. Comparing the spec etc the Acer came out as good value for money. 9 months on we are still happy with the purchase.

Check out the package deals as they can be good value. I bought a bundle that included warranty, accident insurance, a bag and a mouse.

The accident insurance has been very good value. It's been back three times as the lad is rather accident prone (damaged power supply lead, scratched screen, broken keyboard: nothing you can blame Acer for).

If you buy the Acer then get rid of the trial version of Norton and install the free Avast anti virus. Vista has a decent anti-spyware program (called Windows Defender in XP). Perhaps buy a student licence for the trial version of Office, although the included MSWorks is perfectly adequate for school work if you know how to change the file names to standard formats.

Right I have narrowed it down to two ...

Dell
Dual core Pentium
120 GB
2 GB
Webcam

or

PC World
Compaq
Intel Core 2 Pentium

Both Vista home premium and both £395.
