Laptop memory

Guys,
My daughter's lappy needs more memory.
Currently has one 1gb card, though when I look on "control panel-system" it only shows 750mb. Any ideas why that would be ?
The existing memory card is marked:
1gb 2Rx8 PC2-4200 S-444-12

Does this mean 444 mhz ?
All the upgrade PC2-4200 seem to be 533mhz.
Does this matter ? Can I mix the cards ?
It's a Fujitsu Amilo Li1705, about 18 months old, running Vista.

Dont know the answer to your question directly but just upgraded the memory on our home desktop by adding 4gb to the existing 512mb...runs like stink now but doesn't recognise more than 3.5gb running under XP. However I was recommended to go to www.crucial.com and download and run a little program that then recommends upgrades to improve performance. Suggest you do this as it is a great way of finding what works best, of course they will then offer you upgrades to suit, 2x2gb cost of £39.98 which seemed reasonable and arrived within 2 days, also ordered 4gb mem for the Zumo at ridiculously cheap cost of £8.99!!! bargain.

Firstly the difference between the 1GB you think you have and the 750mb it says you have is probably because on that particular model of laptop the video card memory is not separate - so in effect your graphics card is stealing the memory. This little trick is what some manufacturers did to save cost and space.

Secondly would also recommend using Crucial out find to what memory you need and the bear in mind that your existing memory card may have to be removed (and therefore become obsolete) in order to get more memory is

another vote for Crucial - the utility that interrogates your machine, that brian mentions, is very good. Their customer service is excellent and they really do honour the lifetime guarantee in the rare case when something fails after several years.

Enables you to just enter the type of laptop or PC you've got and they seem to know what type of memory you need re. speed, pin layout etc

No. The memory is wiped every time you turn the machine off. Your pictures, programmes etc are stored on the hard drive when you are not using them.

The number is the speed of the memory. The bigger the number, the faster, and the better.
You can mix them but the whole memory will only run the speed of the slowest.

You stand a good chance of making your laptop run poorly by installing the wrong type of memory.
For what it'll cost, take it to your local computer shop and ask them to fit the right memory.
Yes, it'll cost you a few quid extra, but are paying for their expertise.
