SYMPTOMS
When you unplug your portable computer from an AC power source so your computer is only using battery power, the display may dim.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur when Windows XP dims the display to reduce power consumption and improve battery life. Note that this only occurs if your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) supports the alteration of the display brightness level when you are using battery power, and your computer is in Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) mode.

STATUS
This behavior is by design

MORE INFORMATION
You cannot alter this behavior in Windows XP, but you may be able to alter this behavior in your computer's BIOS. To determine if you can alter this behavior in your computer's BIOS, view the documentation that is included with your computer. "

The laptop is a Dell, so does anyone have an idiots (that's me) guide to adjusting the settings in the BIOS.

Cheers

Most dells have a Blue Function Key and extra functions in blue on some keys

My dell has them on the up and down arrows (looks like a blue "sun"). So If I press the Fn button and the up arrow the screen will get brighter.
It also works for the volume (mine is Pageup and page dn for the volume).

If it doesn't have any of these extra function buttons check the BIOS functions.
These are nothing to do with windows, they're the messages you get poppoing up when you start the computer.
After you start it, try pressing the delete key. This will give you a Basic list of some functions. Look through the menus and see if you can see this anywhere.
Save the settings and it will then continue to open windows.
You should only have to do this once.

One thing to nore, the computer will piss through battery much quicker with the light on full brightness.

BIOS......
Mess with this at your peril, if you feck it up it can be terminal, especially if you try to update it to the "latest and greatest" version :nono .

The way the screen dims after the power lead is removed is done to allow your battery to last for more than 5 mins as was previously mentioned.

Basing this on a latitude startup but should be simalar.
On startup (i.e. you see the blue dell logo) press F2 (I think, or F1 if that doesn't work).
You'll go into text screen and ALT + P will go through the pages. One of them will be power settings.
There are two sides, one for on mains / AC and one for on battery. Using the up / down arrow keys select the bars and use the left right arrow keys to add / remove blocks. Make the blocks match each side.
Press ESC to get out of this screen, save changes and it will start again.
If you get stuck drop me a PM and I'll see if I can take you through it at a lower level.

This is the solution, forget about going into the bios... IMHO
