Laptop screen gone psychedelic...

....and I haven't been taking anything.

Pale blue is displaying as purple etc and sometimes certain colours flicker. The time honoured 'fix' of giving it a whack will sometimes put everything right for a few mins then it all goes weird again. I believe it's still under warranty as I'm pretty sure it's (just) under a year old but of course I recently chucked the packaging it was delivered in and it's a pain returning these things.

Are there any diagnostics that can be run?

If it flickers and can occasionally be fixed with a slap. it's most likely the ribbon cable that goes from the case to the screen.

It's worth opening the flap that covers the graphics card first though (but google the specs- if it's an on board graphics chip it won't be that- it needs to be a separate, upgradeable card for tis to be the problem) The graphics card (if it IS a separate component) could be lose- just re-seat it

You can access the ribbon cables usually, but it'll take an hour of finding and undoing dozens of tiny screws that hold all the plastic panels on.

The ribbon cables usually push onto tiny sharp studs, and the repeated opening and closing of the lid can loosen the cable---often, just a finger to push the cable down will do the job, maybe followed by judicious use of a bit of gaffa tape

It's an Acer Aspire 5755G

I also have an acer aspire tat has this issue - its the ribbon cable that runs along the screen hinge.

just search for it on google and there are plently of walk thoughs on how to replace it and check the connection.

i took mine off cleaned the connector and so far its been fine.

tip - when you take the screws out make sure to mark where they are from as some are few mm longer than others.

applied pressure to left hinge and display corrected itself. At least I now know what area to look at if (when) it goes psychedelic again and a strip down is required

ok good, on my acer the connector is just behind the hinge also.

it's a pain returning these things.

If its still under warranty - get it sent back.
Big box - loads of bubble wrap. Simples.
