Laptop will only boot in SAFE mode

Every few months my lappie will 'blue screen' when booting atthe point where I would normally enter user and password. The remedy has always been to boot in SAFE mode and restore the system to the previous weekend (for example). Now however systemrestore is saying that all my restore points are the same as my current config and therefore it will not restore. Any ideas? It works fine in SAFE mode but of course I have limited functionality.

if its XP, throw in an XP cd, go into recovery (by pressing R) mode and when you get the DOS screen type in fixmbr and confirm with yes.

this should sort it......maybe worth running a chkdsk /p & chkdsk /r as well

chkdsk encountered unexpected errors when deleting indexes though so I will run a few disk health check/fix utilities.
