What a manic day - completely of my own making.:D

I set the alarm for 0800 - and, natch, woke before it went off. I dragged my suitcases out of the closet - and my English Pointer Marnie immediately went into sulk mode. I only travel with these bags once a year, yet she recognises them straight off. She goes and lies on the sofa and deigns to accept treats when they are administered.

For several hours, I search for things, find them, lose them again and generally enter a frenzy of packing. I'm allowed one checked bag - 23kg (50lb) plus a cabin bag. Eventually, in between charging the seven or so batteries, for the seven or so cameras I'm packing (best not to ask), and having the lovely Kate visit, and give me a haircut, I think I'm done.

I take Marnie over to her digs - she's being looked after by Vikki, my housekeeper Sarah's daughter. Vikki has four boys under 10 - Marnie loves it there...

Cases-4K.jpg

I almost put my back out, using the natty little digital scales to weigh the large bag - 25.7kg. I randomly decant various things into the smaller bag, then reweigh it - 22.3kg - excellent. :)

My buddy Adrian will be giving me a ride down to Heathrow in the morning - via a full English at the local pub, natch...
DukeGirl.gif

More later...

12th September

The day starts, as all good days do, with a proper breakfast with a mate...

Breakfast-X3.jpg

Adrian has arrived at just after 0800, helped me load the massive cases into his car, then repaired smartly to The Romany Rye, a Wetherspoons pub in the town...
DukeGirl.gif

We set off for Heathrow to the sound of our arteries hardening...

We make excellent time, with traffic on the M25 (always a throw of the dice) being light and fast moving. In fact, even this...

IMG_7441-X3.jpg

...was making a fair crack at the (70) speed limit...

IMG_7444-X3.jpg

Anybody care to make a guess as to make and model?

Bugatti%204.jpg

Fair warning - it might not be as obvious as it seems...:deal

We get to Terminal Five at about 1130 and, due to what we both agreed was confusing signage, ended up in the short-term parking for tall vehicles.

Adrian's car is many things - but tall it is not. Hey-ho...

IMG_7454-X3.jpg

We enter the Terminal - which is just as airless and humid as I remember it from last year - a really unpleasant environment.

IMG_7451-X3.jpg

It is being patrolled by these autonomous robot floor cleaners - which all looked a bit creepy, TBH...

I had checked in online yesterday, but still have to go to a check in desk to drop my bag. The check in chap says, "No laptops or iPads in your checked bags?" - there are, so I have to unload them and put them in my carry on - which is now overfull. Completely different from last year
hmmm.gif
get a boarding pass which has SSSS printed on it - of which more later...
cool_shades.gif

Time for security - hooray. I have been wearing a Covid mask for the whole time I have been in the Terminal, as the new variant is making its way into the UK and - by a buggeration factor that passes all understanding - I can once again get a booster shot next week, but not this week in the UK, exactly like last year...
fpalm.gif

So, I am amongst the estimated 5% who are masked up in the sweaty mosh-pit that is the security check. Once again, the machine raises an electronic eyebrow when I'm wanded (titanium in my right leg), and I have to go into the body scan thing, which batters through my adipose tissue to discover some metalwork that used to hold my ankle together. I'm through and make straight for a loo, where I give my face, arms and hands a thorough wash, then apply sanitiser.

Next up - Duty Free - I pick up a bottle of Severn Year aged Cuban rum for Jorge - he can't get it in the USA. I carefully move things around in my carry-on to ensure its safety...
cool_shades.gif

Like many others here, I'm still feeling hot and bothered. I find a seat and relax, thinking cool thoughts and trying to bring my core temperature down...

Kristy-X3.jpg

"Excuse me, may I sit here?" asks Kristy, from Denver. I say that depends - is she a nice person? She says she tries to be and sits down. She's on her way back for three weeks in the UK and Ireland and is delightful. She has a voluminous bag, apparently full of food and drink - she's clearly intent on eating and drinking her way home...
lol8.gif

Unbidden she presses two large, ice cool bottes of water on me (I clearly look as hot as I feel) and won't let me replace them - definitely a nice person...:thumb

We chat for ages until her gate is identified and we say our farewells and she beetles off towards Colorado. At 1415, my flight's gate is released as B36. This will require a train ride to another part of the Terminal. No matter, I make my way to the correct area, descend at least five floors in a lift, board the train and then use the longest escalators I have ever seen, to climb five floors again in two flights. Right out of the door is B36.

I filter to the front of the queue and the SSSS mark on my boarding pass is noted and I am told I have been specially selected for additional inconvenience - please go with this man...

Airliner%20One-X3.jpg

No problem - our aircraft is waiting at the pier. Along with half a dozen passengers I am then subjected to a more intrusive security check (hands and socks swabbed, laptop and iPad examined), before being released. Whilst this is going on, I'm slightly mystified to see the queue of passengers in the pier not moving forward - there's clearly a hold up at the aircraft door.

Nope - we're cleared and then everyone goes down three flights of stairs to the tarmac, where a bus is waiting. We drive for a full fifteen minutes, at one stage passing under a runway or taxiway. Ultimately, we arrive at our 777, and climb the stairs like Air Force One. My heart sinks as I look into the cabin - every seat is occupied. I later find a Seattle flight cancelled yesterday, and that the passengers have transferred to this one. I make my way to my seat (40G - the aft galley is the only thing behind me), to find there's no overhead storage available. I quickly grab my noise-cancelling headphones, then put it in a bin 19 rows forward...

IMG_7465-X3.jpg

I jam myself into the aisle seat and negotiate with Pete - the Brit in the seat in front - asking him to let me know before he reclines his seat. I was born with Club-class leg length, but an Economy travel budget...:D

We get airborne about 30 minutes late, but we're destined to make up all this time en route due to favourable winds...:thumb

I chat with the cabin staff, who - as ever with BA in my experience - are great. Seeing how jammed in I am, they put me in the crew rest seats for my meal...

IMG_7463-X3.jpg

The food was simple, but surprisingly good - a vaguely spicy pasta meal with some ancillary bits and pieces.

Galley%201-X3.jpg

I watch some films - Marlowe, with Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger. Not bad, but I think he was too old for the character. I go and chat to cabin staff in the galley in between movies...

I rewatch Living, starring Bill Nighy - just a wonderful film...

Finally, I watch Zodiac - quite a long film about the Zodiac killer - I'd watched it several years ago, but it kept my attention to top of descent into Portland.

We land on time, and there's the usual scramble to get cabin baggage. I wait until the scrum moves closer to the overhead bin containing my carry-on, then grab it and make my way to the exit. The Captain - Pete - is waiting at the door and says that my BA benefactor had emailed him a few days back asking if I could be upgraded. He apologises that this wasn't possible because of the flight being fully booked - I tell him his crew have made it a good trip anyway - and thank him for the thought...

Out to Immigration, and - as an ESTA holder - I get a much shorter queue. I'm through very quickly, pick my huge bag up from the carousel, then...

Bus%20One-L.jpg

...board another bus to take us to the arrivals lounge...
lol8.gif

We're soon there and Jorge meets me and whisks me away to his awaiting Land Rover Discovery and we enter the traffic of Portland.

He asks what I fancy to eat. Well - it's Tuesday, right?

IMG_7471-X3.jpg

...so it has to be tacos...
DukeGirl.gif

Taco%20Tuesday%20One-X3.jpg

Jorge read a review on this place the other day - so thought we'd give it a try. I have beef, a chicken and chocolate(!) sauced one and chicken prepared like a Doner kebab...

IMG_7472-X3.jpg

We also had these potato 'chips' (Jorge will be along soon to correct all my crimes against describing Mexican food), which came with two small pots of sauce. The red one was a bit hot. In fact, I can still taste it now - 12 hours later and having cleaned my teeth twice...

El%20Camino-X3.jpg

Wouldn't be a visit to a Mexican restaurant without a pic of an El Camino, would it? :D

After dinner we make our way back to Jorge's beautiful house and I'm attacked (in a half friendly way) by Aster, and welcomed by Carolina. We sit out on the rear deck - it's a beautiful evening - and I decompress and rehydrate, whilst catching up with Jorge and Carolina, and being studiously ignored by Aster... :D

Both of my hosts have early calls, so they leave me to having a (brilliant) shower, and updating my journal...

IMG_7476-X3.jpg

At about 2200 local (0400 body clock), I eventually weaken and drag myself to bed. I go out like a light...

I sleep really well, waking briefly at 0500, but otherwise making it through to 0730. I stumble downstairs and am greeted with a huge latte, made by the lovely Carolina
DukeGirl.gif

Jorge is deep into his first meeting (Cyprus), waves as he finishes that one and starts his second (Cote D'Azur, I think) - he told me last night that he has a manic day today.

I start unpacking my cases and transferring them into the panniers, rollbag and tankbag that will fit on the bike...

IMG_7481-X3.jpg

The bike's ready to go - Jorge has ridden it to work a couple of times and the only slight issue is that the ABS light doesn't come on every cold start. This is a common problem with the system and will undoubtedly improve now that it's going to be in daily usage for a few weeks.

IMG_7483-X3.jpg

Amazon delivered me a new CamelBak a few weeks back, so I unwrap it and set all the straps to "Fat Bastard", before filling it with water.

I have, unfotunately, set myself a tight schedule for the first few days of the trip. I have to be in Reno on Thursday (tomorrow) night, where I have a room booked. To give myself a bit of positive stress, I book a room in Klamath Falls - about five hours from here - for tonight. I plan to leave at about 1400 at the latest today.

Which means I must get back to packing, and that includes packing the MacBook...

More later...

Aster won't come and play with me - or even make eye contact, the little git...
lol8.gif

2023091312430862-2954403691231845019-X3.jpg

Eventually, I close the door, so she can't get in...

IMG_7490-X3.jpg

OK - that's a look :rofl

I let her in and keep packing the bike. Jorge has had to go to the office for more meetings and will endeavour to be home for 1330, to see me off the premises... :D

I'm packing the bike in a slow, methodical way. This is because my head is still fogged from the flight, the change in time zone, the fairly stressful Monday I had - and because I'm beginning to realise I'm fucking old.

I take regular breaks - hence wanting to interact with Aster - to make sure I'm not stressed at the start of the ride. The departure is always a bit of a goat-fuck, but I'm trying to minimise the weird level of anxiety I'm feeling at the moment.

Jorge rocks up at about 1315 and takes excellent charge of the situation, adjusting the tyre pressures, giving me some pepper spray, and discussing route options to get to Klamath Falls.

It's a five-hour ride. I intend to get to Eugene, about 90 miles from Portland, then take a break and refuel. I'll then press straight across country to Klamath Falls. The timing isn't ideal, as I'll be arriving at Klamath around sunset - and there is going to be a lot of riding through forests to get there.

Regular readers may recall that I hit a deer in Idaho in 2006, and can assure you all that the correct way to hunt deer is not on a motorcycle...
patch.gif

Suddenly we're ready - I pull on my kit and take a snap of the display for the stats geeks. Unfortunately for them, there was so much camera shake it was illegible...:D

I look at the panel as I press the starter - exactly 1400! Jorge wishes me well and I ride down his driveway and onto the street. The ABS lights continue to flash, but just after turning onto the splendidly named Terwilligar Drive, I switch off and restart and the problem is solved. For those that are interested, a BMW techie told me that the software in the unit is looking for a voltage - and when the small battery on a bike has just started the engine, the available voltage is slightly lower. Or something like that...

I wend my way through some country roads...

IMG_0920-X4.jpg

...until I reach Interstate Five (I5) and turn south towards Salem and Eugene...

IMG_0921-X4.jpg

I bought Jorge and the bike a present this year - a new GPS - a TomTom 550.

IMG_7502-X3.jpg

I have the identical unit on my bike. It's connected by Bluetooth to my iPhone, and updates on road closures, hold-ups, etc. One of its great features is that you can turn it so that it shows you your route in 'portrait' mode...

The route is simple to follow, but pretty bloody dull...

IMG_0925-X4.jpg

You'll not see a double trailer in the UK...

IMG_0927-X4.jpg

Moving half a house. Acrimonious divorce, perhaps?
hmmm.gif

After a couple of hours, I decide to stop to refuel and have something to eat, near Eugene...

IMG_7491-X3.jpg

I think I'm going to treat myself to something violently American... :D

IMG_7492-X3.jpg

First, though, some lemonade. The weather is perfect for riding - between 75 and 80 F - but it's always nice to get a cold drink to prepare you for the...

IMG_7493-X3.jpg

Bacon and avocado quarter pounder with seasoned fries...
DukeGirl.gif

Yee-ha, and so forth...

It was delicious and all came to about $18, including a 20% tip...

I refuel at the Shell garage with Premium at $5 per gallon. I'm then back on the road and turning off to ride through the Cascades, towards Klamath Falls, some 172 miles distant. I'll easily make it on this tankful...

IMG_0930-X3.jpg

Straight away - first bridge pic...:D

I then enter the Cascades and the forests that cover them. It's a great ride, but the poor old Canon is struggling with this little light (I'm almost always riding in the shade), so few of the pics I took were of usable quality...:(

IMG_0935-X4.jpg

It's a good road - I remember riding the reciprocal last year. The speed limits are low - often 55, occasionally 65. I am so spoilt with my cars - both of which have cruise control and head-up displays that I find the simple act of keeping the bike's speed somewhere near the limit a bit of a challenge...
lol8.gif

In the end, I adopt a technique I devised in New Zealand a few years ago - I pick a 'speed-buddy' - some vehicle that's traveling at about the speed I want to. I just have to keep the gap between us constant and all's well.

IMG_0939-X3.jpg

All in all, despite being tired and a bit frazzled, life is good...

IMG_0961-X3.jpg

I take a slow, steady climb up into the Cascades...

IMG_0964-X3.jpg

...entering the Deschutes National Forest...

IMG_0972-X3.jpg

Traffic starts to thin, then just about disappears. The road is tiger-striped by the shadows of the trees to my right, as the sun sinks toward the horizon. This is not comfortable. Dawn and dusk are the the main times deer are likely to be encountered, and I'm still a long way from the hotel...

I keep my speed at about 60 - no speed buddies now - and form positive mental images of checking in at the hotel.

Weirdly, I pass a derelict-looking restaurant on the east side of the road, called The Halfway House. I wondered where it was halfway to, then looked at my trip meter and distance to run on the GPS - both read 86 miles...
Norton.gif

IMG_0975-X3.jpg

Eventually, Klamath Lake comes into view - not far now. As it does so I ride through a cloud of insects - mosquitoes I think - it was like being hit by rain, and lasted all the time I was riding by the water's edge...

At 1930 I roll in to the Cimarron Inn - check in and ride over to my room...

IMG_7494-X3.jpg

I turn the AC up...

IMG_7501-X3.jpg

Examine my insect collection and unpack the bike.

I feel stressed to hell after the ride through the forest. As I type this, I have to make an effort to unclench my jaw. A good night's sleep will help.

I upload the pics and make a start on the ride report. After about 20 minutes my browser (Firefox) crashes. When it reopens, my draft is not there...
DirtDOG.gif

Never mind. I start again, this time regularly pressing the 'save draft' button on ADVrider. After an HOUR it does it AGAIN...
dizave.gif

Thankfully, the draft reappears as I'm contacting mods - and trying not to burst into tears
lol8.gif

As soon as it reappears, I publish it - then start editing it to add the rest of the stuff...

IMG_7497-X3.jpg

This is a very nice room :)
clear.png

Tough day, but Reno is only 250 miles or so. I'll take a lazy ride down there tomorrow.
