Thanks for the replies chaps.
I am very lucky that my employment means that I can near enough chose when I want to go away, policed only by jobs of work that I know I have got to complete by certain pre-set dates in the calendar. I can also take days off at short notice if an opportunity comes up and / or my employer is generous over not docking time off for mornings when I don't turn up when the chap comes to mend the boiler or for things like dentist appointments. Similarly, I often get tickets for assorted sporting events, evenings out and days away pissing about, which other bods in life would love to go on and which don't cost me a penny.
In exchange for this luxury, I sometimes have to travel abroad at weekends, catch early or late flights from Heathrow (well outside of normal office hours) and above all not take the piss too obviously, too often. I cannot with an easy conscience commit to going away when I know I may well have to be doing work at work; it's just not fair on the bloke who pays me. It may not happen, in which case I can look out of the window and mouth 'Bugger' under my breath... And then work out that Austria will still be there next year and long after I am gone.... And remember that I did go to Edinburgh for the Scotland England game and will be at Twickenham on Sunday for the Wales game.
I am sorry that other people's plans have been mucked up. I enjoy running the Wanders, meeting bods and having a bit of a laugh along the way. I went up to Suffolk from London to meet John, who I know was looking forward to seeing us all. For once, things have not turned out as I imagined they might. Next year or 2016 might be different.
