Whats the lowdown then guys ?
Do we definitely need reflective thingys on our helmets, and what about breathalisers etc etc?

I seem to be able to get hold of some rules and regs but they appear to be from 2013 and could well be out of date by now

Thanks in advance

Just done 9 days in France at the start of July. On a couple of occasions was interacting with the French plod wearing a pure black carbon fibre lid with a chrome iridium visor.................. no problems.

Only thing I ever take is a good attitude, ride safely and politely and your gonna be fine....

...oh, and ride on the other side of the road, that one can upset them is not obeyed.

don't forget that the single white line no overtaking rule only applies to cars....and that you must have your speed camera warning dialed up to max on the gps!!

hi vioz is not requirement altho for locals a reflective patch on your knee slider is a must, also dont forget to have your earplugs connected to your mp3 player, satnav and radio 4 as well as your phone at all times playing at a minimum of 100db to ensure the external noise of traffic is fully drowned out..hth!

you just enjoy....lucky devil

Seriously newbuild100, don't worry about anything at all.

If you commit any offence so bad that the police see fit to add to it because you haven't got stickers on your helmet, you'll be in deep poo already. It will be the least of your worries, trust me.

Just like the UK, just be reasonably careful about where and when and how you decide to ride.... If that means 60 through a French village, so be it.... just live with the consequences if it all goes wrong or you get caught. Alternatively, if that means 120 mph or higher for a sustained burst down the D-whatever through the French countryside, so be it, too.

Thanks for all your answers guys, I appreciate it.

Safe riding to you all

Just done a couple of trips to France, probably 3,000 miles over the month ... saw a few bobbies, mostly hidden at the side of the road with speed camera in hand ... all we got were smiles and waves :D

We had no Hi Viz, no breathalysers whatsits, no helmet stickers ... we wore the same smiles as the gendarmes :thumb

:beerjug:

Now that is funny......:D

However as Micky says, take the right attitude, don't take the piss, make an effort to engage your hosts and all will be well....... I love travelling in France..... especially the spontaneous stops.

I do carry a High viz jacket (not worn though) a small first aid kit (for my own benefit) a spare set of contact lenses (because losing one cuts short your trip) and spare bulbs (because riding in the dark without a headlight is a pain).....these are carried, not because it's France, but because they're damned useful anywhere..... Have a good trip...:D

I know it was last year and it seems French road traffic legislation changes very quickly. I unfortunately has a conversation with 2 nice Gendarmes on the ROute Napoleon last year following my straight lining of a little S bend kink. This did however involve the contravention of a solid white line. They showed no interest in anything else other than the immediate offence and the ensuing exchange of funds. Talking to a local guy later in the day he new the location of the bend exactly and said it was regular haunt for the Gendarmes. He also said so long as you just accept the situation for what it is and don't argue or raise the situation further all the minor things are ignored. Same as here really "mm thank you officer may I have some more humble pie". Certainly after 25 years of playing I couldn't argue having been caught for the first time.
