Picked up the 1050 from it's first service today and the Tech came out to say that the LC8 engine is hard on oil and that I should change the oil between services which he has set at 5,000 miles. (Oil and Filter) That means an oil change every 2,500 miles?? - now, its easy enough on the LC8 engine as the oil drain plug is on the left side....seems a bit extreme I'd have though 5k intervals for Oil and Filter would be plenty...

Anybody else been given this advice?

They are a Main KTM dealer?

Cheers

Eh

Firstly, that's the first I've heard about the engines being hard on oil?

Secondly, the service interval is supposed to be 9,000 miles or yearly.

Thirdly, the service interval in 'secondly' is for the 1190 that puts out a trillion more ponies than your moped and is so highly tuned I can't hink of words to use to describe how highly tuned it is.

Fourthly, having said that, my oil filter collapsed at around 8,000 miles and AFAIK this isn't unheard of (although this issue is supposed to have been sorted now with a better spec'd filter :nenau)

It is most likely that I'll be on Annual Servicing any way as the way my life is at the mo 5,000 miles will be a treat if I do them in a year.... I've looked around WWW a bit and have picked up on a few "i change my oil every 2.5k threads"..... umm...

Blimey, that's not a lot better than my old Husaberg (1 litre of oil, change every 10 hours) so feck that for a game of soldiers!

Evo-engined Harleys used to specify 2500 miles between services but no-one ever did it!

Thinking about it, didn't the 'old' 950/990 LC8 have 5,000 miles oil changes - maybe the mech. is confused............maybe he knows something we don't?

my 1340 gets new oil every 5k ... and does not burn a drop in between...... ( or leak much)

mine have been on standard oil change regime - 9K or 1 year.

neither have made it to 9K.

yet :D

The 950 has 7500km intervals, which is as close to 4500 miles as makes no difference. Mr Tunneruk tells me that the early LC8's (950) are very hard on their oil for some reason. He'll fill in the details if asked, but I believe he got this info from a chap who worked for KTM. I'm not familiar with the intervals on the 1050 but, if you want my two cents worth, changing your oil & filter every 2500 miles seems a little over the top (and bloody expensive!) even if the LC8 is 'hard on oil'

Mine gets a fresh slurp every 4500 miles.

While we're discussing the LC8 lump, I would like to just ride roughshod over Twizzle's original question and ask another completely unrelated one if I may. You don't mind Twizzle do you? Ta. :augie

When you turn the ignition on you hear the fuel pump prime etc and then ordinarily I would expect silence...but no, there is another noise (something electrical I assume) that carries on making a quiet noise for as long as the ignition is on. What tis? Never used to happen on my Airhead. When I first heard it I thought something was afoot and hadn't switched off.

The 950/990 version of the LC8 engine is indeed very hard on oil. I met a guy on holiday who is a long term KTM technician who said it was because of the way the oil Is pumped up beneath the piston upon its return down the stroke. Essentially crashing into it. I'd noticed previously when the oil was coming up to 4000 miles old that the engine got noisier. Something to do with mechanically breaking down the surface tension of the oil or something. I change mine every 4000 albeit 1.5 liters of new oil gets 'topped in' during that period. I've gone to Silkolene pro 10w60 which helps when the old girl gets hot.
Changing at 2.5k seems a little overkill on a modern incarnation of this now well proven unit?

I asked the same question on here; summit to do with the stepper motors running, it's not the fuel pump.

Ah ha, thanks Andres. I'll ask at the dealers this morning when I drop it in to be serviced. (Not that I'm doubting you, you understand...just an inquisitive nature).

Anyway back to 'What oil should I use?' As you where.

Did you have time to ask the dealer for a definitive answer? ;)

He's too busy shredding that rear tyre.......

Not short of time but there was a little doubt in my mind that there would be much point in asking matey on the desk. I just wanted to be out of there. My curiosity had been replaced by a crushing desire to end it all. ;)

Sadly not. Tried to but a sunny Saturday in Surrey is not the best time to explore the upper reaches of a Sooper Duke's rev range. I did briefly try turning off the traction control too. I was scared.

The chances of an uncontrolled wheelie into the back seat of a Volvo estate was high. I'm not sure Mummy would appreciate me meeting 'Joshua and Poppy' (all children round here are called Joshua or Poppy) in such a violent fashion. I went home before something bad happened.
