The formerly Grand Hotel is a more modest affair now. Private car park and the best and priciest breakfast of the trip. 15 euros.
The hotel has 3 floors and no lift so I requested a 1st floor room for the one couple with restricted mobility.
Le Mont Dore is a bit tired and lots not open on a Monday and several places not open at all. The surrounding area is fabulous for riding and very quiet in early September. We stayed just down the road in La Bourboule in 2016 and really like the region.
One of the few bars open was an Irish Pub but we discovered they sold La Bete 8% French Rouge and Ambre. On our second "pint" we were asked, "you know this is very strong beer." The response, "we don't drink with amateurs." He was impressed when we returned for more after a dinner in the nearby place that cooked meat over flame. I then proceeded to drink Islay Malt!
