Leaking clutch slave cylinder

Talk about kiss of death, I only said last week how reliable my 20,000 miler GS 12 has been and I noticed today that I have seapage from where the clutch slave cylinder meets the back of the gearbox. Am I right to believe I can unbolt the cylinder and just replace the seal and put it back together or is it a bit more technical than that? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have got exactly the same fault on my 1200 which has got 15K on it. Bike goes into NoG on monday to be fixed under warrenty. It looks like a simple unbolt job, but i reckon you need to remove rear wheel, disconnect the rear shock and drop the drive shaft down to get clearance to remove the cylinder. I am sure someone will be along soon who has done it and will explain all.

I've had 3 clutch slave cylinder seals go on my bike (they might even have replaced the slave cylinder at on one of these ocassions).

I believe that it is a known issue take it back to your dealer either under warranty or as a goodwill gesture.

Hi guys,

I have had an oil leak from the clutch slave cylinder. it was discovered on the 6K service. I keep the bike quite clean but didnt notice the oil on the rear of the 'box. The dealer said 'it was engine oil seeping along a shaft, past the clutch, past the gear box and out through the clutch slave cylinder'. apparently you will recognise the smell of gera box oil.

luckily the bike is still under warrenty, the dealer sorted it, changing the leaking seal and replacing the clutch. they said 'I might as well change both as the bike is under warrenty' - d'ya know I think they were right!!



I am a bit worried, why did this happen in the first 6K miles, will it happen again - the dealer had the bike for 2 days, how much will that cost out of warrenty.


I was under the impression that the basic design of the 'ngin and gearbox has been around for lots of years, why do we 'suddenly' have problems like this? did they always leak

anyway i hope you get sorted.

Guys, thanks for the reply's

I took the bike down to Bahnstormer BMW in Alton yesterday and they seem to think it is the seal and its going in Wednesday to be replaced. The bikes six months out of warranty but they have quoted me around £25 to fix so quite reasonable really.

I think it maybe a bit more expensivethan you think as bythe sounds of it the crank seal has gone, check if the oil feels slimy like brake fluid or does it feel like engine oil (there is a difference in feel beleive it or not).

Hopefully this might help you out but I am afraid it dosent sound like good news.

Noticed that mine was also leaking after our trip to spain as well as the gearbox oil seal.

Bike goes into NOG Thursday for repair of both.
