Leaking GS Adventure BMW-TopBox

My bike permanently lives outside with the BMW branded Touratech topbox on it. I came to use it on Tuesday after not being used over the BH weekend to find that the top box had a load of water in it - at least half a cup. Soggy helmet and gloves too. Lovely.

Now I know that we had a shed load of rain over the 3 day long weekend, but I wouldn't expect a box marketed as being "weatherproof" would leak. Even if the bike was left on its side stand.

I've had a good look at the sealing mechanism there just doesnt seems to be enough of a lip to get a good seal and it would seem that capilliary action is "sucking" the water in. The vario-box for the GS seems to have a much better sealing mechanism.

All seems a bit shite given the price of the damned boxes.

Anyone else had issues with these things leaking? Seems a bit rich given the price of the damned things.

Take it back to the dealer and get it swapped out under warranty, they should not leak

over a 300 mile journey at the w/e i got similar amounts of water in both panniers & a lesser amount in the top box.

Try this it worked for me:
I found by opening and closing one box in particular by using the other lock as a hinge,ie; swinging the box open, when reclosing the box it did not seal properly. To get a proper seal,open the other lock to the first semi open position. The lid can then reseat itself properly, and snap both locks closed at the same time. It really only adds another second or so to the procedure!

I wouldn't expect a box marketed as being "weatherproof" would leak.

I'd have thought that to be totally impervious to water, an item had to be classed as waterproof.

Used mine for the first time two weeks back to go to the French GP (via reims old circuit). Rained like it has for the last 3 years and the top box and panniers were completely water tight, in fact the top box and RH pannier were air tight as evidenced by the his they made when you unfasten them.

Top kit, well impressed with mine.

Usually blast dead flies off mine with a power-wash. No leaks so far in either the T/B or panniers.

Take it back and make a warranty claim..they are supposed to be waterproof.

I had a similar leak with my right side panier this weekend the other two stayed dry as you say not good for the price

I didn't think that they were waterproof which is why BMW sell waterproof liners?

I get water in mine after washing the bike and I don't think it all gets in through the seal either - if you look at how the boxes are made it is possible for water to get in around the seams.

Next you'll be wanting a bike that doesn't have transmission problems
