Before setting off to the Alps I had my bike serviced. On the run down to Dover I noticed a strong smell of oil, at the ferry port I noticed quite a bit of oil seeping from the spark plug cover. I checked the oil and it seemed to be over full. Nothing I could do there so I carried on to Cambrai. By then a lot of oil was seeping out of the plug area.
I called in at BMW Lille and for 30 euro took the cover off, cleaned and checked it and fitted new gaskets. I showed them the oil level (IE no clear space visible in the oil window) and they said it was OK.
40 miles later it was leaking worse, at the overnight stop I lent the bike over to try gauge the oil leve and on returning it to the stand it rolled foreward and fell over. The puddle of oil under the bike was quite alarming.
We cut short the run to the Alps and returned to the Normandy coast. Over the next 850 miles it leaked constantly and only just started to show in the oil window.

Question,
Will overfilling the oil cause the rocker gaskets to blow?
Where did the large puddle of oil come from, no hole on rocker box and too much to have accumulated behind the spark plug.

I do believe that there is a small round gasket(inside cover) at the base of the plug tunnel, if this has been left out or misplaced on the seat then it would cause said leaking.

Re oil sight glass and level. I also noticed that on return from a service it was covering all the glass, but did drop down after approx 1000mls while on tour. But there's filled and FILLED.....

Update,
The rocker box cover had cracked round the central spark plug in the tumble.
The oil leaking before is a mystery, at a service the oil is fully drained and the filter swapped. The new oil is poured in via a special measuring device specified by BMW so overfilling is not possible.

Thanks to my local dealer Allan Jefferies for lending me a second hand cover until my new one arrives. (No oil leaking now)
