Leaky fork seal

Hi all got a slight annoyance on my 99 11 gs had a leaks fork seal so replaced it ... still leaked... I thought was a problem with the stansion so i swapped them over to see if the leak moved to the other leg but nope same leg leaked. Right I thought I must have put the new seal in wrong so I took the whole slider off this time and in the process shagged the front abs sensor . I have come to the conclusion the brass bush in the slider may be worn? So ordered new brass bushes new seals and a used and sensor.. anyone else had any problems they than share or and advice? I thought I may have put the seal in upside down but there’s only one way it can go from a pressing home point of view and it looks correct.

Not sure it will help but when I changed my fork seals the legs were covered in oil and I convinced myself that they were leeking but it was the excess oil pooling on the top of the new seal and recoating the legs ever time I pushed the forks down.

A few swear words later I cleaned the legs and the top of the seals to find they were all good.

Thanks Ian very interesting, handy reply I did wonder at what point the oil will dissipate, I think I will get the abs sensor fixed and use it for a while and report back. Maybe pop out the dust seal and soak up the residue. Is yours ok now?

Make sure everything is nice and warm when you do it so you don't damage the seal.

Yes fine after that, and I replaced the seals about 7 or 8 years ago.

Ace hopefully mines ok then will see how it goes I have ordered the brass bush under the washer to incase that is out of spec

Had a similar issue a few weeks ago, changed it three times before it just resolved itself. Not sure what I’d done wrong but they’re easily damaged.

Thanks hops ,to cold to look now at it I'll remove the dust seal make % sure it's dry on top of the oil seal and see how it behaves.i have two more seals and the brass bush coming from motorworks tomorrow but will be next week at the earliest until I can look at it but with mot looming I'm Keen to get it sorted, also going to fit the new second hand abs sensor

Leaky fork seals are a constant threat on trail bikes, but I got one of these Seal Doctors a while ago and it's been revelation

They come in a range of sizes to suit different diameter fork stantions and worked a treat on the USD forks on my Honda (which, BTW are a pain to replace the seals on)

Good news gents mot test today and she passed also looks like the fork seal is no longer an issue so I guess it must have been the oil residue on the top of the oil seal rising up the fork so thanks for all your help and advice

another trick if you have a leaky seal and its cause is a bit of stuck dirt

same idea as the tool above but free

remember film negative ?

put it against the stanchion on the fork at a slight angle, feed the front edge up behind the seal, do a quick lap of the fork and take it out at a slight leading edge angle so as to push any accumulated dirt out.

Plus I think you have to let the excess air out, once you fit the stanchions, using the little screw at the top, otherwise it blows out through the seals and takes some oil with it,

It's been a long time since I owned a 1100/1150 though, so I may be doing a bendy.

Ahh that could explain it! Thanks very much although I can’t seem to find air screws at the top will have another look over the weekend kind you it seems to be ok now

Thanks dr I have heard about this before but never with negative strip with a go before works commence in future
