Leaky Panniers

I have the BMW aluminium pannier system on my 1150GSA, the nearside pannier leaks. I have located the area, it is where the exhaust cut out is,
along the bottom seam.
Q. Is this a common problem?
What is thebest way to seal it, both inside and out?

Run a bit of silicone sealant around the area.

Thanks, thats what I thought just wondered about the heat from exhaust on the outside.

You can get heat resistant sealant (I forget what it is called at present, when I remember I will post it ), but its okay for temps up to about 250 deg C. We use it at work for insulating terminals in ovens.

12GSA Panniers...

Should the 12GSA panniers let in water too? Not too fussed as I've got the inner bags but if they shouldn't then that's different.

Mine haven't leaked but I was thinking about getting a set of bags that fit inside - probably not BMW as I think they're a bit steep.

I've got some Filson bags that fit reasonably well but they're quite bulky in themselves - any ideas?

No, but aparently there were some issues with some of the early ones. Don't know if it's been resolved. It's also important that the lids be removed and re-fitted, rather than just hinged up at one side. Over time the seal will be pulled towards whatever side gets used as the hinge, and will start leaking.

I think we used to get it from RS (Radio Spares). But a search on the net should come up with something. Probably a bit too specialised for places like B&Q. Although some motor vehicle parts stockists may sell it.

RTV is just silicone bath sealant, available from B&Q etc. if you think you really need the high temperature stuff (i rather doubt it) a motor factors should have some.
