Lean times for some!

why

When you buy a bike why do we have to spend hundreds of pounds to fettle fueling problems?? Im sure most would pay at source to have a E stamped after market exhaust on buying a new bike and solve all the robbery once baught?????.
Also is it really worth all the hassle trying to rid a bit of snatchiness at low revs an gain 2.3 hp gain if your lucky!!.I baught my GS cos i like the way it runs and drinks fiel why upset the balance, buy a rice rocket if your not happy with the bikes response an output/noise :augie:blast:nenau:thumb

BMW have to design the exhaust and the fuel mapping to give a balance of performance and economy while complying with emissions and noise regulations. You can make the bike more driveable by de-catting, fitting a less restrictive exhaust and altering the fueling with a PC or similar, but BMW can't because they have to stick to the EC rules.

You will get loads of popping and farting with the CAT removed and an aftermarket can which shouldn't be a problem.

Try putting the standard filter back on and do you run with the baffle in? Baffle in makes it run better IMHO.

If you feel you need the K&N, I would always recommend a power commander for the fuelling.

Hi Chris

Remember me, I bought a set of Keiham headers from you early this year for my 58 plate GSA. Changing headers released some power. I then fitted an ackropvic can and ran it with baffles in. Again alittle more power but mostly better exhaust note. Now I run with baffles removed and in my experience my bike picks up better with baffles removed. I've since put them back in a few times but I can always notice a slight lack in performance with them in. People who have commented on my exhaust note with baffles out say it sounds really nice! However, as a result of changing the exhaust system I find there seems to be flat spots when I pull hard through the rev range - slight hesitations. I'm convinced it's because I need to complete my tuning by fitting a Power Commander and have a custom map to smooth it all out and perhaps get more pulling power than I already have.

Regarding what's been said about a K+N filter I can add this. I also own a Buell XB12Ss. I replaced the exhaust on that also. Also notice a flat spot. Fitted a Remus Powerizer and ran it. Alittle better but not much. Then I fitted a pipercross foam airfilter and the bike took off. Flat spot was gone. I then removed the Remus Powerizer fueller but left the airfilter in. This reduced performance slightly. Went back to stock ECU (no fueler) and stock air filter and I'm back to the flat spot from 4K. The Buells take off from 3K. So from my limited experience adding a fueler and performance air filter made all the difference and removed my flat spots. I can only think I will need to do the same with my GSA?

Could use some help here. I got my 12GSA with the full Akro system and K&N filter, but no power commander and as far as I can guess :nenau no re-map...

It does feel pretty jerky at low speed/low revs, and feels like it's running rich with loads of popping and farting on decel.......

Would y'all recommend a power commander? I'm assuming in my naivety, a re-map is not possible....

Be careful that the popping is not just your Panniers. The 12 pops a lot due to the panniers being to close to the exhaust, take them off an see if you get an improvement, at least then you know why the popping occurs.

Mine only pops with left pannier fitted, no pooing when pannier is off the bike.

Mine pops with or without the panniers... remus headers and ackro end can fitted.

Ive got a K & N in the cupboard. SO what do you lot reckon it should go in. The GS ( solely for road use) or the HP2E solely for off road?

Let the wisdom commence.

Ummm. popping in the exhaust is too much air in the system, either through a leak or lack of baffles and back pressure. This is also a sign of lean running.

If you bike only pops with the panniers fitted, may I suggest you remove the panniers, carefully take the lids off and empty the excess air out of them and then quickly replace the lids and seal with cling film. This will make the loading of the panniers in future a bit of a challege, but that is the price of having a high performance motorcycle I'm afraid. :D

Yep , that'll have been me :thumb

Bet my user name gave me away :D

:beerjug:

Think you sold me some bar raisers? Or was it me that sold them to you?

Well anyway its nice to bump into you again :)

I can personally recommend one of these.:thumb2
http://www.sol2.be/Accelerator/English/index.html

It has transformed the fuelling on my GSA and it’s the best 29euros i have ever spent on my bike. :bow

Must admit, it looks like a con!

Tell me more?

I thought it sounded to good to be true. But the results have blown me away.

Quote from the other thread:
OK, right, I did a decent 160 mile road test yesterday, on town, country and motorway roads.

Verdict?

I am extremely impressed with this 29 euros module.

Performance:
With the module fitted, there is now a distinct increase in power and throttle response through the rev range, and I love it.
My GSA lifts its front wheel with ease in first gear off the throttle. ok they all do that sir.
Yesterday, with the module fitted, the front wheel went skyward as I was accelerating hard down a MW slip road…in second gear. This alone impressed the hell out of me.

Fuel economy:
This result shocked me even more.
Average fuel consumption pre-module = 45.1 MPG (on computer)
Average fuel consumption with module = 46.1….wow.

Don’t ask me about how this simple bit of wire works. It could be black magic for all I care…but it has transformed the performance of my GSA.

So, to say I’m over the moon impressed with this module, Is an understatement.:clap

Recommended.

Thanks Yonkyo

I've since read a thread here about this and a bit about the other similar product which is a staggering £219! I've ordered my Accelerator now but was wondering if I made a mistake cause the other item costing £220 appears from the data sheet to be better!

The data sheet test used a standard 2004 1150GS which a totally different animal to the 2008/9 1200GS/GSA, regarding the Euro3 lean burn fuelling.
And anyway its not a huge difference in performance between the two products (and certainly not £200 difference). But it give huge improvement over standard.
Believe me, the Accelerator works like magic on the newer 1200GS’s.

I'll see how it performance. My GSA is a 2008 model with Keiham headers (no cat) and a ackrapovic can, without baffles preferred :D

Wondering if a performance air filter should be next on the list?

I have a K&N air filter, but i've held off fitting it because i don’t think the Accelerator Module will compensate for an even leaner fuel/air mix.:nenau

Full exhaust system + K&N = PowerCommander and custom dyno set-up, i'd say:thumb
