This is about as crazy as it gets but I've traded my beautiful 30th Anniversary f650 back in for a new Triple Black Adventure.

The timing is terrible but the deals on the run out Adventures and RTs are too good to refuse.

The 650 was unmarked and had 1,000 miles on but wifey was determined (quite reasonably) that I should now be running a maximum of three vehicles - our wonderful new camper van, a big bike and the c1 scooter that makes it all possible.

So the f650 has gone to the Great Dealer in the Sky (Vines) :blast

I have the greatest respect for the model in particular and the 800 engine in general. I shall certainly miss the fuel consumption and the totally delightful vario top box.

Ride safe everyone :clap

Enjoy your Adventure! :D

I keep thinking about changing! But my 4 year old 650 is still doing a fantastic job that I'm not sure!

Hope it proves to be a better bike than the new water cooled item, looked on there today. Nothing but moans.

I've ridden the LC and it is a fabulous bike. At one stage I really wanted one but I will admit I am hooked on the Adventures and the LC is not out until March, even then it will probably be £5k more than I paid for this package

I decided I did not want two extra radiators, fans and a water pump to worry about. I don't need the 110bhp that I have, never mind the 125bhp of the new model. Or to spend an additional £5000.

This is my personal position, I'm sure the LC owners love their bikes and would not go back.

The guy who bought my 650 is taking it to Africa next year so it's gone to a good home. He's delighted, I'm more than happy and Vines are pleased to get another sale so quickly. Everyone's happy which is perfect :beerjug:

To be honest I just love BMW bikes and I could probably live with any model in their range.

Loving the Adventure though :bounce1

Mad accountant .. would you be kind enough to run a class for us ? I'm sure we'd happily subscribe !
Perhaps entitled "trading in your bike without losing your shirt"..
I'm baffled at how many times you swap bikes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a bad negotiator myself... but BMW dealers seem to give me such low trade-in values I end up "falling out with them" and walking away.

I see an adventure triple black is £12400 without the essential heated grips.... will that not depreciate fast as the WC adventure makes an appearance ?

What am I missing ?

I'm really sorry, I must come across as completely ridiculous/ some sort of addict :blast

You might be surprised to know that I bought my car (a 98 Volvo V70) eleven years ago and paid £6000 for it and it is still going strong.
:augie
We bought our camper van 15 years ago for £8495 and sold it in July for ......£8,495 !

So it's not as if I waste much money on cars!

I was queued up in the garage yesterday and the guy in front of me paid 8.39 for a packet of 20 cigarettes. When I got back to my office I calculated (at today's prices) that since I stopped smoking 30th November 1980 I have not spent £100,500 on cigarettes.

My mortgage was paid off a few years ago and I have been tee-total for 4 years now.

None of this excuses the amount of money the bike swapping costs me.

What I will say about that is that I don't spend as much as you would think. I have a great relationship with my dealer and we transact with mutual respect, I listen carefully to their advice and buy/ sell at the best times.

I don't want to publicly discuss the details of my GSA purchase but the savings (including the £2000 free extras deal) against list on my Adventure were 4 times what I lost on the f650

My fleet is now my new camper van, the c1 and the Adventure and hopefully that will be stable for many years to come. :nenau

I know you were poking fun but I hope my explanation is helpful

:rob your just a Mad Accountant :D

:rob and I think your calculation is not accurate :augie

But I get your point :thumby:

Enjoy the 12A, I'm sure you will :beerjug:

No justification needed.:thumb Motorcycling is still a cheap hobby* compared to some of the things people get up to.:rob:beerjug:

* Cue screams of "it's not a hobby, its my only form of transport, and I ride every day of the year, in all weather".:P:D

Trust me - I'm an Accountant :blagblah

11981 days x £8.39 is £100,520

My loss on the f650 was £750 , my buy price was £3,530 under list :-)

I absolutely promise you I shall not be buying any more bikes - I'm not even considering resale values anymore because I have no intention of changing anything for many years.

(I actually had to change from the f650 as the cable clutch was too heavy for my left hand which I injured when I dropped my r100r on it. It was a beautiful bike and I will miss it but if I hit heavy traffic and needed a lot of clutch work my hand hurt like hell.)

I've probably said it before (us old'uns tend to repeat ourselves)

My hobby is not motorcycles - it's BMW MOTORCYCLES !

Me too

You must like depreciation and chucking away money

You had a TwinCam Adv, this time last year - which is exactly the same bike as you've just bought:blast

Frankly I can't fathom the logic, other than you like shiny things and wasting money:confused:

I'm glad you're not my Accountant:blast

Ah, but you've failed to take account for inflation in the almost 33 years. Cigarettes did not cost £8.39 a packet in November 1980.

In mitigation you haven't inluded the compound interest that could have accrued if you'd invested the unspent money. If you had the figure you quoted may have been up to 10 times greater.

I know I know :-)

But I did start my posting with "This is about as crazy as it gets...."

See my posting above for why the f650 had to go.

And actually it's not the same bike, this is a Triple Black and is nearly a year younger. It's lost the top box but gained a NAV 4, pannier bags and straps.

depreciation? I sold my Red twin cam for £12,750 (and used that money to finance the van) and paid £12,890 for this Triple Black (it was a pre-reg 13 plate with zero miles)

I think I did OK :aidan

(If you're looking for a new accountant, please don't call me)
