Guys not sure if what happened to mine is correct but I think it was due to water ingress into the connector it only failed on the left, the last time I had it replaced the wiring conector was also replaced.
As soon as I got home from the dealer I disconnected them and sprayed ACF50 into them I had no further issues after that for the last 3 months I had the bike.
I have now sold it and waiting for my new S 1000 XR (mid July)

Agree with all Terry said. Am sure there are a number of issues, so probably doesn't fix every ones, but mine was also intermittent, then completely off L/H side. Removed plug from back, noticed a small amount of water ingress. Dried out then re-plugged, sprayed with ACF50 and not had issue since.....I do try and avoid area with hose pipe when cleaning though ;-)
Spoke to BMW tech at the bike show too and he said they have this come up quite a bit.....so looks like a design flaw as much as anything else.

They may do both options if the connector is corroded, but most likely a new unit.

My bike is going in next Saturday (under warranty), so what's the fix? New light unit, or new wiring? Just so I'm prepared.

Got my new 15 plate gs 5-6weeks ago. 3 weeks ago I had bmw fit the led fog lights, two rides latter left one gone off.
Booked it into bmw but on the morning I was heading over it started working again although slow turning on compared to right.
They can't find and faults and have ordered a new set but want the bike back for a day to investigate, it's in my paint shop getting few bits colour coded so when that's done I will be back starting from scratch.
The worlds most expensive lights that last a few weeks!!!

Its water ingress into the connector the contacts then corrode and the light goes out sometimes before it corrodes too bad, the light works intermittently but then will totally fail later on.
very poor design. which is what I thought originally, I think mine was the first to fail but watch this space I think there will be more to come.

PS roll on July new 1000 XR and ive not got LED spots this time.
Mines been back in now 4 times for the left hand lamp,
I picked it back up today after them having it for a week, they replaced wiring and lamps
Did the 5 mile journey home in lovely warm weather no rain etc and guess what the left lamp is off again.
I have now asked them to remove the hole set up and give me my money back. Bike was brand new in April.

I just bought my gs,4 days ago,asked for 2 lights to be fitted,,,,,,then i was told the price £490 plus fitting,,,,around £100 for that,,,,,,,i thought he was joking,,,,,,,,haha,,,,,,but wasn't! Bought some for £130 with all the wiring/switch etc. Will fit when i get time,,,,and can trace the live from the ignition.

Interestingly my ones just gone on the right. booked into the dealer next month and a loan bike - though they quibbled with the loan bike at first..
Same issue on my RTLC.
First one stopped working and then the other. Both failed in heavy rain.
Dealer said it was the switch and all seems fine since they "switched" it...

Just got it back from the dealers the other day. They changed the control unit but didn't fix issue, now they have changed the lights to the ones of I believe a 1600 ( or something along them lines ) the Gs ones are meant to be 12w and these are 14w so far so good only done 500 miles tho.
Now am not even sure if there are different lights for different bikes maybe someone knows better just seems odd. but that's what they told me so time will tell.

I'm just interested to know that when the fog lamp fails do you get a warning light/message come up on the dash?

I didn't get a warning
Just had a 6k service today. They replaced the left switch gear, as there was a fault with the cruise control switch. My right fog light started flickering after i picked it up and is now off altogether....bugger. Worked fine before. I guess I'm going back to Vines in the morning ....
