Do the Routiers restaurants still exist and still do prixe fixe menus?

Yes but rare and no, they are generally less expensive but they charge what they can get away with.

Vin et cafe compris is also a rarity these days to.

A ghost from my past! I started touring France in the ‘80s and quite by accident discovered this wonderful network of good quality cheap food.
It was about 2.30pm and I was pleasantly lost but heading the general direction of my destination when my stomach reminded me that the 2 croissants at 7am had long since disappeared and it was time for a refill when I saw the Les Routiers sign outside of a modest establishment.
So in my abysmal french I asked if I was too late, and with a quick look at the clock the lady offered me a starter, rabbit stew, a dessert and plonked s small carafe of wine on the table. I ate royally for the grand total of 10 francs, fixed price!
A brilliant idea and for years afterwards I planned my routes from their handbook.

Google reveals:

And

I still see a few on my trips through France, but they have certainly, and sadly dropped in number

Yes, food on the go is getting more and more expensive and Les Routiers were always brilliant value.

I remember being astonished at the drivers of massive rigs having a beer, a pastis, wine then a cognac along with a massive lunch and then getting back in their trucks!

Is there a guide any more, or just pot luck if you happen to find one?

Now that’s weird! I was just checking my Google bookmarks and noticed I’d saved this:

The reason for the yearly medicals for truck drivers over 45!

https://www.relais-routiers.com/# - there are more than you realise although some are quite upmarket without truck parking these days.

Thanks chaps.

Downloaded and bookmarked.

Off to Eauze on an Armagnac buying expedition in a couple of weeks and trying to stay off peages.
