well I went "awassalling" yesterday got the hid dip beam on my r1150gs.
great job Les.An extremely helpful Gser
we discussed the options and he is very patient and knowledgable
I already have a Touratech aux fog and xenon hid.
but the dip beam is what i need for everyday use.

What I need to see is how, and where you placed the ballasts, If you got pictures showing where you were able to mount/hide the ballasts, please pictures to inspire the rest of us.

The ballasts mount below the oil cooler using the bracket supplied in Les' kit. Cables are then tie wrapped to the front sub frame. All very easy.

Took me about 2hrs from start to finish and that included head scratching time.

Do you have to remove the lamp or instrument unit to fit Les's kit? I take it the instructions are fairly good and lead you through the process easily, even for someone with half a brain like me?

I new you wouldn't be able to resist after seeing mine.

You wouldn't let it lie that my bike had a bit of bling on that yours didn't

Just need to do the Scarver next, then maybe your loverly wife won't be wondering what's lying in the road in front of her

Here you go Sven,

The kit is very easy to fit- I took off the beak and the windscreen, then removed the instruments as I didn't want to risk scratching anything, the whole job didn't take long and the difference is amazing.

The ballasts from the front.

And from the back- the wiring isn't very tidy but you can't see any of the fittings when you look at the bike normally.

I took the light pod out c/w instrument panel. If you had the dexterity of a gynaecologist you could probably leave the pod on, but its so easy to get off and makes the job easier. Also off came the beak and hence the winglets and side panels.

On the adventure you've also got the take the upper crash bars off to fit the bracket onto the back of the oil cooler.

Its then fairly obvious where to tie-wrap the cables.

i went for the hint of blue rather than the harsh white.
but each to their own.
i was impressed with briano's lights.

BUT ask him whose low beam dip light is better

Hi there, I've been reading the thread and other related ones, took a look around hid50.com too. I am really tempted to do this mod, even just doing the dipped beam would seriously light up some of the lanes I travel at the moment. However I am really concerned about dazzling other road users. Blinding people that you are following is just going to annoy them, blinding oncoming traffic on winding lanes is potentially dangerous. Yes I know I would be on dipped, but the GS is a tall bike and the front end does tend to rise a bit when using the twisty bit on the righthand bar. It is difficult to get a feel for what they really look like when looking at photographs. What are your experiences like ? Do you gets lot's of "flashes" ?

I have my light set and get no flashes, if they are in the right position and the suspension is set right then no problems, if you leave them high or have the suspension set soft then when you give it some the lights will raise and you will get flashed.

But if the standard lights were set wrong you would get flashed, maybe not as much though

Do yourself a favour and do the conversion. Les did mine last year on both dipped and main. The illumination is tremendous.

Les did both my main and dipped and I run with Hid fog lights.

I haven't been flashed by oncoming traffic and only get the occassional flash from behind from cars I have just overtaken(more to do with the GS lights being at mirror level than anything else i think.

Les does a very professional job, I would recommend the full hog.

Not had anybody flashing me and I've been riding round London in the dark. As with the normal lights, when you close in on a car, your lights will shine straight into their mirrors with a bike as big as the GS.

If you do nothing else, put a 50W HiD on the dip beam, it makes a lot of difference.
