Lest we Forget

Here is how I see it with the current argument on this thread. I’m a left ish wing person. I think we spend far too much money in this county on spurious wars and military hardware which seems to me to be a cock waving contest. Money we should spend on looking after our people and our infrastructure. Especially as these days the real wars are being fought on the Internet and in the shadows, not with Challenger II tanks on the eastern flanks of Europe.

And you are right we do live in the free world and you are free to say what you want here on this forum or elsewhere. Fine go ahead.

But........

With freedom comes responsibility and sometimes it’s not about arguing for the sake of it but respecting the fact this is a sensitive post and that maybe it’s not the time to hammer home a “point” just to make a “point”.

I think we should all respect Rememberance day, not for queen and country or politics but for all those men and women who experienced and were slaughtered under utter horror that most of us can’t even understand. That is why I stand silent on the 11th/11th and all why on my bike travels I visit Normandy, Arnhem and other significant sites around Europe where others fought and suffered.

If you forget the past you will make the same mistakes in the future.

If you forget the past you will make the same mistakes in the future.

I’m not saying forget the past , but don’t dwell on it as that energy is wasted . Use the energy to prevent the future wars so we don’t have remembrance

You do what you like with your 'energy', but you have no right to disrespect, as you have done throughout, the right of the OP to use his energy as he wishes, and to share his experience as he wishes.

The truth is that you set out to be objectionable, chose to spoil the sentiment behind some-one elses thread, and dont like it when you are called out. You deserve all the abuse you get. Your posts are unpleasant; we can but assume that you are as well. Please go away.

If you don’t like what I write , why keep on coming back ? Are you some sort of high and mighty forum police?

Remember it wasn’t me that very early on in the thread called a Journalist a CNUT because he put forward a view that someone opposed . I didn’t see you wanting him to go away with his disrespectful posting . Nor did I use foul language to get my point across as you do .It just seems that because I have different views to you I should go away and not you . Ridiculous

Your drivel cannot go unchallenged.

You clearly do not want to understand decent behaviour; when and where to press your agenda. Despite being told repeatedly that this is not the place to do so you insist on spoiling another mans thread. This demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of the forum, and illustrates your total lack of respect for its members. That is why it would be better if you went away.

'I also wonder what your argument would be if someone posted pictures of attending the Holocaust memorial day next January, should we look to forget all those who were murdered during the so called final solution? '

Jetjock, what IS your argument for this??

FFS make it stop.

This thread has descended into a complete farce.

Do people REALLY think they will change somebody's POV on a subject by telling that person what their own POV is. Either these people are really stoopid or, more likely self obsessed and have to let their ego have it's moment.

If people object to what others are saying on what started out as a respectful thread then STFU. Of course that's only if you really are objecting rather than letting loose your ego.....................

All fires need oxygen................

Objecting yes. Ego no, I leave that to others.

I bet - hats off to you for getting out though!

Here’s a picture I took at the viewpoint shortly before you passed there.

That's a stunning picture

I visited the Commando Memorial back in June 2012 when I rode the Iron Butt rally...

Thanks Bounce.

It’s a stunning area so it’s hard not to get the odd decent picture. I’ve had a 150yr old cottage outside Fort Augustus for the last 9 years or so and it’s somewhere I spend time as often as I can.

As for the way the rest of this thread has gone what can I say. There are some characters on this site that I’m glad are only a virtual part of my existence.

Remembrance Sunday has, for the past few years, seen me riding west through all sorts of weather, to pay my respects at the Commando Monument memorial at Spean Bridge to those that have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Thanks Steve. Seems to be more and more people there every time I go past.

I was hosting a shoot on the 11th. I stopped the day at 11; we all stood in silence on the hill for a minute, and virtually everybody there saw me later during the course of the day and and said how much they appreciated the gesture.

A small thing but still appropriate.

It's called respect. Pretty simple really, some folk have made a sacrifice that others haven't had to, so it is only logical and reasonable to be in enormous gratitude and to pay respect.

If someone wants to argue about war, remembrance, sacrifice - start a thread all of your own, don't piss on a respectful note of remembrance. We all have our sore points and none of us want them ripped up. So please remember that. Piss take on something less emotive.

Jetjock is quite an effective anti war campaigner, tho he's too ignorant to realise it.

I mean, let's face it, if all those lads who died could have seen into the future and had an insight into the kind of gobshite they were giving their lives for, they'd probably have had second thoughts.

How does that poem go - "When you go Home, tell them of us and say, For your Tomorrow, we gave our Today"

They gave their todays so that people could talk shite on the internet purely for the sake of causing an argument.

It's kind of a good thing that their generation isn't around to see what their mates made the ultimate sacrifice for, they'd be proper pissed off!

Thanks Steve.
Thanks Gerardd :jager

I too was out in the field on the 11th, working the dog. Come the 11th hour, we all stopped, guns & beaters alike, to pay our respects. Stood in the middle of a stubble park, staring out over the land laid out in front of me, thinking of freinds that have past. Moving indeed.
