Hi there,

I've not long joined and not long had my 2009 GSA. I went on my first 'big' run yesterday (had to stick to motorways because of time constraints).
Anyway, about 100 miles in with another 70 or so to go, J24 M62 westbound, lane 3 at an indicated 80mph - lost all power, engine died!
Managed to get over to the hard shoulder dodging the many trucks and cars all around me. Must admit, I think I did a little poo while I was trying to get safe!
I've been impressed with BMW so far, took me to Chester Motorrad, when that was closed, got me to my parents garage and arranged for the bike to be picked up this morning, and providing me with a hire car (would have preferred I bike)
So, I await to see what the dealer has to say.

So wanting to go out for a bike ride you choose 170 miles on a motorway?
Sounds like you and the 1200GS are a perfect match :thumb2

I would have 'chose' the long way, like north York moors, dales or the lakes. But I had to be somewhere at a certain time, so motorway it was yesterday unfortunately.

trippy, you really are a tosser:(

Strongly Agree Mikeyboy I would go beyond that!!

Girth if there was no banging and rattling noises then it's probably the fuel pump controller they are famous for that

Let me know when you get it back and I strongly suggest vaseline on the seals and connectors and if you don't have a fuel pump cover buy one and seal the vents so that the water can't get in there

Mine is an 04 that had one replacement and it is still the replacement pre 06 one

let me apologise for Trippy, he has problems with reading and comprehension. Hope you bikes fixed soon, let us know what the problem is/was :thumby:

Yeah it's a well known fact that if you ride a GS on the motorway it will break down, in fact on page 27 of the handbook it specifically says "avoid motorways" as the bike isn't designed for use on them.

The OP really should have read the handbook. :blast

And.........as for travelling 170 miles........that will never do will it?

Bad luck Matey. Hope it's fixed soon. I've done the powerless coasting across 3 lanes of M6 myself (on a brand new Duc)
I think I have finally got the smell out of my leathers :thumb

Sounds very much like it and good to carry a spare once you're sorted, or make up a lead to bypass it in emergensies (there's a thread in this section somewhere on how to make one).

Oh, and as you may have gathered by now, ignore Trippy, most other peeps do :thumb

Breakdown

First welcome to the site, second don't take any notice of what Trippy says the blokes a wanker. Don't worry about the bike sounds like fuel pump as already
stated, I assume you dident run out of fuel? been done before more than
once owing to a sticking fuel sender in the tank. Good luck with the repair
let us know what happens.

Welcome to hell, and the forum.

Also try leaning the bike over, so you move petrol from one side of the tank to the other. Theres a thread about the tank not emptying correctly. I will try to link it for you.

Well, ran the bike for 20 mins this morning, got it red hot, didn't fail!
Still had it recovered to the dealer, so it's in their hands now.
Told them that I wouldn't ride it until its sorted and I'll keep the hire car just out of spite even though I don't need it.

I mentioned about the known fuel pump issues and the guy denied all knowledge about any fuel pump problems with GS's.

It's a VERY well known problem so either the guy is having you on or he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about..............

They can become intermitant before failing completley so don't rule it out just 'cos you got the bike started ok.
