At the risk of getting shot, Lewis isn’t all that interesting. Harris (the joined island to the south) is much nicer as it has hills and great beaches. A loop south from Tarbert via the Golden Road on the east side to Rodel and back via the west side beaches on the A859 is only 40 or 50 miles, but it isn’t something you’ll rush and is a really great trip. The Anchorage at Leverburgh is a good spot of lunch.

However, in Lewis, The Callanish Stones are 4,000 years old, very beautiful and certainly thought provoking.

Don’t expect to buy petrol (or indeed anything else!) on a Sunday.

The petrol station in Stornoway was open on a Sunday last time I was there. Things are changing as the coories die out.

Agreed superb hotel, and fine nosh, might be a good idea to try and get a deal in advance, we just turned up and I do recall the the bill being the highest of our holiday.

There are indeed places open on Sundays now...

Had Sunday lunch here last May... :thumb2

For something even more remote, try Scalpay where we stayed here for a night...
