it seems the top heavy weight kills the ktm's in deep sand ?

As wierd as it sounds THERE IS something about boxers in the deep sand!

While most of (n00bs) praise very lightweight singles in the deep sand (only because it's easier to pick/push them up/out when stuck or when fallen)...

I remember John Deacon started to cry in Dakar 2000 after the crash in gravel section and he cryed because the next day was the first (deep) sand section, saying in front of the camera: "the bike is just so good in the sand" (it's HPN-BMW R900RR bike) while crying, obviously he was hoping to score well in the sand against lighter/less powerful bikes. Certanly worth noting if it comes from a mouth of a guy who usually raced KTM single cylinder bikes.

Some racers say "the power is everything in the steep sand dunes". I'm guessing why some experienced racers like Jimmy Lewis, John Deacon (RIP) praise the boxer in the sand is the torque and traction reasons(?) Boxer has 180 degree TDC meaning it's even-harmonic type of traction - the piston "big bangs" are coherently distributed in terms of crankshaft rotation rate = optimum ("silky" like some racers say) traction, which is very important in the sand. While V-engine has "rattling" TDC timing = TDC times have no symmetry over one crankshaft turn like the boxer has, the piston "big bangs" are "unevenly" distributed. Another probable and maybe connected to previous reason is the amount of torque the boxer generates and doing it on very low rpms. 115Nm@5500rpm is the best in the class, i.e. KTM 950 Super Enduro generating 95Nm@7000rpm, giving the HP2 clear torque-per-weight ratio advantage, which is important in the sand. 17% more torque at the same weight and it's distributed to much lower RPMs.

My theory anyways, which is fully intuitive as an observer.

Ohh yes, post some pics! :thumb2
