My shotgun cert is up for renewal 4/11/26.

Licencing authority is Thames Valley.

Any advice on when to start the application process?

Last week.

I start my shotgun license renewal once the old Bill have told me its due, they will get in touch with the process needed. I have just renewed mine and I was contacted just over 3 months before it was due. Good luck, it gets harder every year👍

Not too bad with Thames Valley apparently:

Hi chap, here is the report: https://basc.org.uk/firearms/firearms-licensing-report/

TRT is Turnaround time, so yep that's how I read it, most within 4 months, and 40 days on average.

As others have said, the sooner you start the better.. ..my last renewal, much of the delay was actually with my GP's, I had to go down the shootcert route as the GP's wouldn't complete the form, even for a fee.
It took the GP's then months and months to do the subject access request (Give me all my data) which itself is a GDPR breech.

Good point! Im a member of BASC so I might give them a call.

Last time my GP did do the certificate but the practice has now changed hands.

What are you meant to do if your GP won’t produce the info to the old bill?

Pain in the arse as far as I can see as they have to request the info from your GP still, so I guess it will take longer
Thanks for that info, it’s all a bit of a joke then. Like you say they still have to contact your GP🤔 Glad mines done for another 5 years, good luck with your application 🙏🏻

your gp report will be valid for 6 months get that done early as that is causing all kinds of hold up, make sure your gp fills in the whole form and signs it, remember if your GP wont do it and you have to go through med cert or similar that all takes time and 4/5 months is not unheard of, I would be checking NOW to make sure your GP will complete the forms. I would submit application 3 months before expiry, your cert will automatically be extended by 8 weeks so long as it is received at least 2 months before expiry date, and if you do they must renew it in time. PM me for any detailed info. Fill in the form correctly, if is asks for medical stuff put everything down, if it askes for criminal history it means other than parking tickets every single thing since you were born!!!!! complete EVERY question if its not applicable put N/A or not applicable do not just leave it blank, make if paying by cheque make sure you have the correct payee, make sure the photo submitted is a new one and not one from years ago, if putting serial numbers on the form, make sure they are correct don't do what lots do and copy everything off old cert and forget that they sold 2!!! and they get included on the new application at which point somebody questions why you still have guns you said were sold.
Before anyone else states its not this or that, this is my job different force area but been doing this a long time unless your an FEO or work in FLU then NO you don't know

Thanks for that. very useful info. Am I correct in thinking 2 referees are needed now?

yes two refs for all applications, they don't sign the form or countersign the photo anymore just supply the details, be aware all adults in the house hold will also probably be spoken to, in particular partners of applicants. also the new form is completely different from previous ones, its been totally redesigned, take your time biggest reason for delays is forms returned because they have not been correctly filled in, second is wrong payee details and third GP not completing their form correctly
