So just wondered if you were to change the engine oil at the required intervals, and you rode mainly in no traffic below say 4k rpm, giving it the occasionally welly.

What would be the life expectancy of a 1150gs ( 02 ) engine - in terms of mileage ?
I'm currently on 60,000 and wondered if I could reach say.... urmmmm 160,000 miles.

Chap over the pond has a Rockster that's done over 200 thousand and he still does track days on it. Regular servicing with good oil and don't lug the motor, go for it.

Yep, I've seen Hanks bike in real life, no engine work - all stock! Hank has one or two set of complete gearbox bearings replaced, some 5-6 times FD bearings. Hence those 11xx boxer motors are the perpetuum mobile of motorcycles - just bomb proof. So the engine is not a problem, it's the drive shaft, gearbox & suspension parts that are the "weak" spots.

From what I've heard 1100 has better materials used, 1150 has better gearbox design. 1150 went into a bigger mass production, hence material quality suffered.

Long life engine.

1150 more or less the same as 1100. (?)
2001RT-182K ,,The splain was no good anymore,so I gave it away.
2003GSA-178K ,,On this one the splain was as a new one,but I did not thake the chance to use it on long trip anymore.
2003RT-141K,,Stil on the road, but only in the winter,.
2001GSA-161K ,My main bike the last years,,
(KM;not miles)

ca.80% long distance touring.
Same clutch,no problem.

No engine work,just normal service.

My 2001 1150GS is currently on it's way home from New Zealand after spending Jan & Feb touring this beautiful country. We did over 6,000 miles there -and current mileage is now 193,058.
I've owned the bike from new and it has ALWAYS been owner serviced. Engine has required nothing except servicing. Gearbox had to be stripped and a couple of bearings replaced.
It still runs like it did at 20K and doesn't use any more oil than it did then - but you begin to wonder if you should give it a preventative strip and inspect/overhaul rather than waiting for the big bang:eek: - things like cam chain tensioner blades I suppose?

The Donkey,my 1100 has way over 400k on it now and still goes well.I think the main problem with bikes and reliability these days is people don't feckin ride them.

The biggest problem on any motorcycle is the nut that joins the handlebars to the seat........a good quality nut will get longer out of the bike before problems.

The motto usually uttered is: if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

The modern, home tinkerer version of this is: If it isn't broken, fix it until it is.

Mechanical sympathy while riding will make a HUGE difference.
