Twice in the last two days my bike has thrown up the brake failure light, displayed the red triangle and has had the speedo stop working.I have also noticed that if I switch the engine off with full beam on the full beam stays on till i swich the ignition off al together, but seeing as how the sidelight only comes on when the ignition is swiched on is this right?Has this happened to any one else?
Steve and Jim i,ll see ya Saturday. :)

What do you mean by "switching the engine off" and "switching the ignition off altogether"?

If i use the kill swich or stall the engine.Or swich off then back on.

Speedo stops working

Mine did that a couple of days ago, Red triangle lights up, brake failure message lights, speedo stops working.

Stop the bike, re-start, no problems then a mile later same thing again.

Riden it after for a couple more days - no problems so far.

BMW dealer says it could be a problem with the rear ABS sensor & should store a fault in diagnostics.

Going in for first service soon.

Still loving it :D

I can confirm that the main beam stays on until you switch the igition off. More correctly if you switch the bike on whent the main beam is switched on, it will come on. This is slightly different to the dipped beam which goes on and off with the engine.

Not quite, Mr Monkey :)

If you kill the engine with the kill switch the dipped beam will stay on, assuming it was on in the first place. That's how it works on my bike anyway.

Of course you can always turn the dip beam off using the magic finger shuffle, but only when the bike is stationary.

I had the same a number of times on my old bike, it was cured when I sold it and bought a new one! You didn't buy it did you?

Seriously, the fault persisted, the GT1 said the fault had been temporary and was now resolved! However after a number of "temporary fault resolvements" I was p***ed of, so drove straight to SPC with the fault current (ie i didn't switch off the ignition to reset) the bike was connected to the gt1 which then showed a fault with the abs controller ( somethin about an internal pressure loss) this was replaced under warrantee, I rode the bike for another 2 weeks untill the new one came with no problems.

Hope that helped

OK let me clarify this. The main beam is on,blue indicator light on thumb switch in on position. The bike is stopped ignition turned off main beam(blue light)stays on thumb switch in on position as does the dipped beam.OK,with me so far?
Ignition is turned to the lock position all lights go out, switch still in on position(keep up ,keep up).Ignition turned on.Main beam(CW blue light)and parking light come on(switch in on position).Starter operated engine starts dipped beam comes on as well (as it does normally)Just seemed odd that the dipped beam wont operate till the engine is going but the main beam can operate willy nilly.
Is this just my bike (AGAIN)or is it a quirk of the 1200GS!

P.S its died again gone back to dealer a simple operation that BMW MANAGED TO FCUK UP AGAIN.THEY DIDNT SEND THE RECOVERY TRUCK AND THE HIRE CAR PEOPLE DIDN'T SEND A CAR.TRUTH IS BMW(NOT THE DEALERS,NOT SSB,NOTAUTOLIFT-CHESTER BUT BMW B FOOKIN M FOOKIN W MESSED UP YET AGAIN.THEY ARE A SHOWER OF SHITE.SOME ONE ASKED ON THIS SITE WOULD YOU HAVE ANOTHER NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO .THE BIKE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH OR SPECIAL ENOUGH TO FORGIVE ALL THE THINGS THAT GO WRONG.

I had the same thing at the week-end, warning triangle and brake failure light...my rear brakes were crap. I pulled in and restarted the engine and everythin was hunky-dory. Didn't give it too much thought til reading this thread. If it happens again I'll report it. Didn't have high beam on so don't know about the lights and I think the speedo was fine.

Still love it though. :thumb

Karn-Evil - how you describe the lights sounds normal to me.

The high beam will work any time the ignition key is in the "on" position.

The dip beam only comes on once the engine has started, and goes off when the key is turned to "off".

I wouldn't start the engine with the main beam on by the way, it's just a bit of extra load that the battery doesn't need to supply.
