Lights switching on by themselves / draining battery

Got to my bike after work to find front side light and tail light on. Battery dead.

Normally they switch themselves off when ignition key removed but noticed recently that the lights were staying on. Cycling the power switched them off. Today I had to cycle the power to get them off. But seems they came on by themselves after I left it this morning to find flat battery tonight. Genius.

Ideas on how to fix this pls !!!

Did you turn the key off one position to the left too much?

EDIT....gowan, go out and check........there's another position on the ignition which sets parking lights on......I've done it before

You switch the parking lights on by pressing the RH indicator button for 3 seconds after you switch the ignition off.

Normally you press until the lights come on. Page 55 of the manual.

If WindyC is not pressing the left indicator switch then may be the microswitch is becoming defective, it is not unknown. Symptoms of the left switch going is unexpected left turn indcator when riding along, and parking light unexpectedly coming on.

Well I'm damned. Been riding R1200GS bikes since '04 and I never knew about the parking light function by holding the LH indicator switch on.

Turns out that my handle bar muffs were causing the indicator switch to be pressed, thereby switching the parking lights on.

I noticed that you can acutally turn on the parking lights after the ignition switch is off and key removed; you have a period of time before the bike goes to sleep. Which explains why the lights were coming on after I checked they were off.

Have been using the muffs for several winters and this is the first time I have had this issue. But I find that every time you fit them they settle in a slightly difference place.

The fix it for certain option is a heavy duty switch in the main fuse power supply. Flick that off and nothing will happen. Just an idea I used to use on cars that in those days had security beaten by a 2 years old.
