After fitting a Pair of Les's HID kits to my 1150 night riding was vastly improved over the pi$$ poor standard set-up.
I still reckoned that the low beam cut-off was too low and that the high beam just "brightened up" the same area the low beam illuminated without actually giving much "further" illumination.

I went out and had a play tonight.
Took a new Hi-lux out on a flat straight country lane and parked the bike next to it. I then raised the lamps using the adjuster (plastic hex nut in the middle of the flippy lever on the left hand side, the one that lowers the lights for when you're fully loaded) so that the dip beam cut off point was the same as the hi-lux's. took a few turns to get the beams matched which confirmed my suspicions that the GS lamps were way too low.
Next I adjusted the high beam to match the Hi-lux's. I raised this using the two screws diagonally above and below the lamp unit. Initially i raised it using the bottom screw then corrected the angle off-set using the top screw.
The difference in riding the bike at night is really impressive. Regardles of whether you've got HID's or not give it a go
If you've got hid and thing they improve night riding 100% as I thought they did, then setting up the lights improves them the same amount again.
The bike now has the same illumination range as the hi-lux but the illuminated area is probably brighter due to the HID's
