Hi,

I am interested in people's experiences with damaged 1200GSs. I'm keeping my eye open for one that may come up around the traps. Assuming it has not had major front or rear (god forbid!) end damage but just moderate drop-at-speed type damage, I was wondering what experiences people had with that type of accident. Particularly WHICH items are susceptible to WHAT type of damage and the likely COST of the replacement part.

Such as screen, silencer, side plastics on p/tank, barkbusters and of course cyl head!

Is the rear/main frame sturdy enough to survive all but the worst of accidents?

Very keen to hear what part you've had to replace and what it cost (ex labour).

Finally, not very familiar with all the options so what are the main popular ones and how easily are they recognised ? eg ABS, etc.

Cheers

ABS wasn't an option when the biek first came out, but I believe it is now. An ABS fitted bike will have an "ABS" button on the left hand bars.

A bike with heated grips will have a heated grip switch on the right hand bars.

The only other option I can think of would be the alarm ... I'm not sure immediately how you'd recognise that in the absence of a corresponding key fob.

Thanks for the info - what month/year or vin no did they start fitting ABS?

Well, one could check for the alarm sounder under the pillion seat. I know, its absence is not 100% proof that the alarm hasn't been installed but its a starter.

ABS was a standard fitment on '04 bikes. It's now an option on '05 models.

SO would it be fair to assume that any ABS equipped bike would have a "ABS" labelled switch on the bars? Sorry for the noobish point :)

All the 12GS's with ABS (which is all of them at the moment) have a button on the bars with 'ABS' on it. The button is to turn ABS funtion off if, for example the rider wants to ride off road.

An ABS equiped bike would also have ABS if it had ABS:rolleyes:

Thanks for the ABS details. Anybody with any experiences about likely damaged bits?

Ha - found one written off with less than 500km on clock and ABS and apparently very light cosmetic damage. Total cost (ex labour) of parts to make good around $3500, sold for $16600 whilst new its $21.5K +ORC (+ABS?)
