Lilith Bites the Tarmac

mud hedge and ditch and survived !

Well after our recent trip it was clear that Big Red was quicker than the Purple Peril, even with my 20 stone and bigger panniers..
So we swopped bikes and seats for a ride before a spot of Green laning and a picnic.
But this was not to happen.
RED is quicker and tank slaps with a lighter person riding her, Lilith felt the full force before my eyes.. I watched Lilith hit the tarmac hard and end up in a ditch and hedge.... unconscious and then amnesia, neck pains and I thought the worst, a possible dislocated shoulder.
Ambulance, Police, and off to A&E.
Lilith Had no neck injury come up on the scan, but did have damaged Kidney and a broken clavicle . concussion but no brain damage










We can only thank BMW for the quality of the gloves and helmet and the much millined twat suit that was almost intact (small holes) Michele had no yes no graves to any part of her body thank you BMW but it was cut off at A&E Thank goes to all the docs nurses at Addenbrookes

We are now at home safe and recovering

Back in the days before they were known as airheads, Bee Emms would tank slap like a bugger if they weren't fitted with tyres which were stiff enough to damp any oscillations of the flexible chassis. ISTR that Metzlers or Continentals were the only tyres which BMW recommended for precisely that reason.

I remember a friend's Dunlop TT100 shod R75/6 trying to spit me off at 80 mph. It was fine for him because his fat bastard build meant that his mass damped out the oscillations before they became full-blown tank slappers; whereas for racing snakes like me, it was positively dangerous.

Like the others have said.. Glad you are OK.
As a matter of interest, I noticed that my Bertha developed a severe tank slapper at anything over 85, below that she was ok. I was on TKC,s. Tourances are ok at higher speed without any signs of a problem.
Ive a bit of video used at the police training school showing the effects of "wobble and weave" various bikes used on a circuit to the point where they began to weave the devope tank slappers.
lighter riders were more prone to encounter weave but the answer to it was to immediately lie prone on the tank and reduce speed. the effect was instant and control regained.
wobble was something else and airheads suffer from it dramatically. try slowing down with your hands almost free of the bars. uder about 30 mph the bars begin to shake and then get progressively worse to fall of state.
take hold of the bars and normal service resumes.
modern bikes do not suffer due to improved frames and suspensions.

The bike pic's were put on the form as we are amazed at the lack of damage as it hit verges and slid some 100m or so, Lilith wanted to comment on the bike protection as well, brush gaurds with Ali incerts and crash bars on the engine and the panner rails all helped the bike and her hand and legs stay intact. Airheads BMWobbles
