Lincolnshire Area Servicing

We've just moved to Lincolnshire, not far from Sleaford, and I'm looking for somewhere to take the GSA for servicing.

It looks like my options are as follows:

• Balderston, Peterborough: 41 miles
• Roy Pidcock, Nottingham: 44
• Marshall, Grimsby: 58
• Wollastan, Northampton: 66
• Rainbow, Rotherham: 71

The only one I have any experience of is Rainbow who were really helpful when we broke down some years ago on a GS (failed battery) and a salesman spent time with me looking at GSAs even though I told him I wasn't ready to buy yet.

Are there any others in the list you'd recommend or ones I should avoid?

Sorry, same problem as the S10 only this time it's the Allianz warranty which mandates main dealer servicing.

Avoid Pidcocks
Avoid Balderstones
Avoid Marshalls

I know nothing about Woolastons

I use Rainbow.

As an ex GS owner I can highly recommend Balderstons of Peterborough. I found them helpful, friendly and always experienced exceptional service from them.

Sounds like you want to stay within the dealer network, but if not you could try Scrimingers in Sleaford. BMW specialist,good reputation etc etc.

Why not try Mikeyboy of this parish. He's in Holwell, just north of Melton Mowbray.

He comes highly recommended.

To be honest I'd really rather not as a good independent is, with the odd exception, usually much better than a main dealer IME; I've had some very, er, 'variable' experiences with BMW main dealers. The problem is the Allianz warranty is only valid if it is main dealer serviced and then there are the recalls. I haven't renewed the warranty yet this year so perhaps I need to think about that.

Have a serious think about using Mikeyboy in Melton. He is excellent and has just done a brilliant job on my 1200GSA. I would bin your warranty, perhaps keep the cost in a separate account for emergencies and let him service your bike as it will be done properly.

I've just started up the BMW insured warranty (I run it only for the months in the year I run the bike), and the policy doesn't mandate dealer servicing- only servicing in line with manufacturer recommended specs. That's opened up my options to the local Indy.

Assuming we're talking about the extended warranty supplied by Mondial Assistance, it doesn't say this on page 20?

1. When servicing your motorcycle, failure to comply with the service schedule recommended by BMW may invalidate this warranty. All service and warranty work must be carried out by an Authorised BMW Dealer or BMW Service Authorised Workshop using only Genuine BMW Parts. Your BMW Service Booklet should be stamped, dated and detailed with the correct mileage at the time of service by the servicing dealer.

I still haven't renewed the warranty and I'm leaning towards not doing so but I now appear to have two recalls and they are going to necessitate a main dealer visit.

It is the Mondial Assistance policy, but in the supplied policy booklet (and the pdf Emailed when I took out the policy) it says

"What must I do to keep the
Warranty valid?
The terms and conditions of the
warranty listed below must be adhered
to. Failure to do so will result in the
rejection of a claim or the termination of
your BMW Motorrad Insured
Warranty. This does not affect your
statutory rights.
1. a) Care of your motorcycle - You
must keep your motorcycle in an
efficient and road worthy condition and
regularly service it in accordance with
the Manufacturer’s recommendations
and genuine parts, or parts of equivalent
specification must be used.
b) After each service, please ensure that
the relevant service details are
completed in your service records by
the servicing garage and obtain a receipt
for the service. You must keep all such
receipts for reference in the event of a
claim.
2. Your BMW Motorrad Insured
Warranty may also be invalidated if
you continue to ride your motorcycle
when a fault becomes apparent...."

.. and I can't find any reference to dealer-only servicing. The policy was bought four weeks ago.

Having said that, I've just had the letter about the rear brake disc flange so might just take it to the dealer anyway

That's interesting, thanks. My policy handbook is from just over a year ago so it looks like it's changed. I trawled their site trying to find the new handbook when I saw your earlier post but drew a blank; I'll have another look later as that may change my mind about the renewal.

[nods] I've got that one as well -"Hey, you've got a problem but we're going to fix it for you...when we get some parts" . Still, at least they're upfront about it. I also have an earlier one that was something to do with a fuel leak IIRC (we've moved since receiving it and I've no idea where the notice is at the moment). Our GSA has always stunk of petrol but at every service I've been told there's no problem. I'm hoping the recall indicates there is and it will be resolved.

I forgot about this thread. In view of the recalls I went to Balderstones in Peterborough where they did an excellent job at a reasonable price; I was quite impressed.

My only, very minor, complaint was the customer chairs weren't designed for sitting on for any length of time.

Lazy fucker....there's a huuuuuge just opposite complete with Costa to sit at and view the passing yummy mummies.

But I'd still consider mickeyboy as previously recommended
