I believe it could be problematic to get to Russia from Anchorage, but if you go to Sarah Palin's house, you can see Russia from there....
I've ridden to Alaska twice. Don't be impressed--I'm one hell of a lot closer than you are!
Make sure you visit Canada's Jasper & Banff Parks. Ride up the AlCan, ride down the Cassiar. If you're comfortable with gravel and can cover 250 miles or better between fuel stops, go to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and/or Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada. Eat at Fast Eddies and stay at the EAGLE CLAW motorcycle campground in Tok. Go to Anchorage and visit Don Rosene at THE MOTORCYCLE SHOP (BMW, Ducati, Triumph), and tell him
Tom from Salem sent you.
Stop for every motorcycle stopped alongside the road and ask if they need help.
Do a bus trip in Denali.
Learn how to camp safely in bear country! Be prepared to fix flat tires. Pack a spare innertube, even if you have tubeless tires. Budget for fresh tires--they are EXPENSIVE in the hinterlands!
Wear waterproof gear, especially boots and gloves. Pack clothing for chilly weather. Pack mosquito netting for your head. Budget for motel stays if weather should get nasty. Be flexible, as weather and road conditions may alter your preeferred schedule. Take
tons of pictures. Understand that collisions with moose, bears, caribou, deer and buffalo harvest some motorcycle travellers every summer, so ride safely. BEWARE of the iron-decked bridge coming into Teslin--It'll scare the Bejesus out of you while crossing.
Make a small sign of who you are and where you're from for Watson Lake's SIGNPOST FOREST. Watch out for Mighty Moe in Cassier. Marvel in the raw beauty of British Columbia.
Enjoy the company of the adventuring motorcyclists you'll find in this part of the world. Be prepared to bond and make some lifelong friends on this trip. Places like Watson Lake, Teslin, Whitehorse, Dawson, Coldfoot, Bell II can become something like a spontaneus Adventure Rally during the summer months.
If you come through Salem, Oregon, gimme a call. You'll have a place to pitch your tent and wrench on your steed, if I'm not out riding somewhere myself.
