We used to trailer an 1100 gs and a TDM 900 behind a camper van- I used to ride the bikes on to the trailer and the wife would strap them down, 2 straps on the front and 2 on the back and away we went - no problems.
We once took a train from Prague to the Tatra mountains, strapped the bikes on using the same system (in the dark). The train rattled around so much we never thought the bikes would survive but sure enough there they were the next morning.
I tie the wheels down with ratchet straps - as tight as you like. Hooks don't matter as nothing is going to move. Front wheel is in one of those chock/grab things that will actually hold the bike up on it's own. I use a couple of straps from high as poss. on the frame to stop it from leaning. The bike can bounce around on it's suspension if it wants to. It would do that on the road anyway..

Don't need to compress the suspension or any old shite like that. Front and rear wheels strapped down in the channel or wheel chock, two straps to stop it falling over. If you're worried about hooks jumping out, a bungee between the two straps helps keep tension on.
