Hi thewre - I'm wanting to change the operating system on a laptop from Win2000 to Windows XP as i'm giving it to a colleague and thats whats shes used to.

How do I go about over writing the 2000. Do I need top format the present HD again??

Any help appreciated.

if its a newish laptop you should be able to just stick in a win xp cd and boot up from it (if that does not work just check your boot order in the bios) - you can do an in-place upgrade (run the xp cd from windows 2000) but i would recommend a fresh install. - make sure you have the XP drivers for that model laptop - if not download them first from the manufactures website.

regarding formatting the hard drive, not necessary but i would recommend it, that way you know for the most part any personal data will be wiped

Thans for that.

I actually found the XP disk did load and I formatted the C;\drive. For some reason it had 2 partitions on it (a C and a D drive??). It seems to have done the trick though. The only other question is that it says when I start the office applications that I need to register the software before I use it another 48 times - I've never seen this before and it most likely won't be connected to the net???. The software is legit so I could register it by phone but is this normal???

Welcome to the world of Product Activation. Quick (usually) call to MS will get that sorted.

very possibly a hidden partition where the laptop manufacturers placed windows rescue disc files.

and which XP has kindly formatted for you. don't u just luv microsoft.

Mind you, go to say the product activiation is stopping the 'buy one copy of office for the whole office' game. Which does not make some of my customers too happy.

surely xp will only have formatted C?

D should still be there. i'd be inclined to delete it to free up space.

re: office

not all copies have product activation ;)

I got my disk direct from Microsoft via work. I only have to pay £17 to use it on my home PC or another laptop. I'm just thinking if I want to load it onto another PC when I upgrade??
