BIKERS who use the roads in and around Helmsley like a ‘speedway’, so let me get this straight. they go round corners only in one direction and also sideways. hmmmmm , Methinks gutter press exaggeration and a degree of bias has crept into this story somewhat.

Who needs the truth when we have newspapers eh....

helmsley on a weekend is a busy popular bustling yorkshire market town, its like this because of visitors, its going to be noisy due to all of the extra traffic,
not just because, of bikes.

some people have got nothing better to do than look for the bad in different groups of people, just because they dont have the same interests,
it doesnt matter if you are a honest hard working, biker, caravaner, dog walker, fisherman, or rambler, someone somewhere will always try to look for fault or try to cause trouble for groups,

helmsley is a pleasant place visited by pleasant bikers.

And quite a few total wankers and that's the problem. I moved to Thirsk 30 years ago and then up into the Dales 17 years ago and the majority of the time nobody really cares about bikers but some days it can be total pain in the arse. Noise is a big issue, riders think race pipes sound really cool but in reality where I live you can hear bikes in an arc 2.5 miles to the east and out to the west, on a dry summers day they start at 5am and it's constant. You can pick which corner the groups are at and every couple of weeks the noise from a group just stops and the majority of the time about 5 minutes later you here the ambulance and police on there way.

There aren't as many bikes about as there used to be, in 2000 the police used my old house to sit at while they did a survey on bikes using the A684 from Leyburn to Hawes and during a single day the count was well over 4000.

Everyone should take there rose tinted specs off sometime.
 
The likes of Bike and Ride must shoulder a fair amount of blame for their stupid articles about 'fast roads' with a photo of a cranked over bike on some lovely road with the speedo clearly showing 80plus MPH on a 50 or 60 mph road. :rolleyes:
I avoid places like Helmsley and Hawes when they're busy. I go out for a ride with a small group of like minded mates, find nice quiet roads without the power ranger knobheads out to prove they're as good as Rossi :rolleyes: and certainly don't want to stand about listening to how they got their kneedown at 90mph.

I moved up bout 10 year ago to near the Settle end of the road to Ribblehead :rolleyes:. Although bikes gather in places like Settle and Hawes, its more of an issue on the road between. I have friends :aidan in Horton who curse bikes because of those who ignore sped limits and think loud pipes are "cool":mad: Try living in a place like Selside on a summer Sunday morning :rob. 2 bikes got done a couple of year ago doing over the ton in the 40 limit through Langcliffe. Result ....... upset locals, bad press for motorcycles :blast but worst of all ..... 11 deaths on Yorkshire roads so far this year
 
Duncombe Park hosts the annual MAG Farmyard rally & quite a lot of attendees descend into Helmsley for food and beer - giving business folk a lot of custom. I've been a few times and from what I've heard very few locals oppose it - I guess if the majority did, then the MAG rally would have to located elsewhere!

At a residents meeting I once experienced the wrath of a bloke in my street who said he was representing the whole street, when in fact, he hadn't asked anyone for their opinion. He didn't like me pointing that out. The lady in question also seems to be airing her own views "on behalf" of no one.

Personally, I tend to avoid Helmsley just based on the parking fee, although there are free parking spaces if you look around a few corners :)
 
Business as usual in Helmsley yesterday. Bikers sitting in the sun with a coffee or in the cafes having a bite to eat.
Noisiest vehicle going through town was an old Vauxhall with a go faster exhaust:D
 
if they didn't have bikes to moan about they would find something else or someone else to moan about, these sort of people just cant help but moan and whinge on, its in their genes
