Lockable Mounts.. ??

As a visitor in your patch, I have spent (survived - more like) an evening in Jinty McGinty's (a well den of vice for beer and Gaelic steaks and rebel music). Most Glaswegian's know this place.

As to Allfix and dome nut screws (I was being serious and NOT pulling your sporren). Next time .. maybe !.

RAM-man

i'll vouch for allfix, they are very local to me & i use them often. only downside is the inevitable queue at the trade counter.

I am bumping this old thread to help answer the few who have ask about making the mounting arm secure or tamperproof.

Some have seen and mentioned the locking RAM knob (puck with a key lock), however there is a simpler tweak using a a dome cap(allen key head) with 1.5" (approx 40mm) thread and a dome head nut.

This 'aged' thread shows pics before and after of how to tweak the arm.http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29203&highlight=lockable+mounts

The bits can make the arm 'tamperproof' or at least you cannot undue the arm and get at the cradle, but the GPS is still vulnerable.

I am giving this aged thread a timely bump as the subject of tamperproofing either a zumo or TT Rider V2 mount arm has been raised. The RAM knob3L is another method but this 'trick' IMV is simpler and more effective.

Thanks for bumping this Steve. Was looking at ways of leaving the Zumo mount on the bike with at peast some form of security. Do you have a piccie of the purpose built RAM knob? and can you give me some idea of cost. Quite fancy the simpler screw type fix, but not sure where to start with sizes etc. Your help is much appreciated.

http://www.gpsw.co.uk/details/prod3694.html is the original RAM part, RAM-knob3L but both TT Rider and Zumo have it under their own part number as well. If fitting onto a sports bike with a mount and gps in the cockpit its makes the area very busy .. IMV.

I originally had the Garmin mount and you don't need to undo the Torx screww to take the satnav off - just rip it off.

I found the Garnin mount a fiddle to use and changed to Touratech - but not the one with a locking screw, mine has a key lock with a key to match my panniers. I have also replaced the wing nut on the RAM arm with a self locking nut.

I think the Touratech mount is a bit more thief resistant and it would probably take longer to get the satnav off than with the Garmin mount. I tend to leave the satnav for short stops like filling up but - when I remember - I take it off if the bike is out of site. I have forgotton though on motorway services, shopping in town and the local supermarket and still have the satnav.

As my satnav is on the left bar I can also put my helmet over it which is locked in place with a bike chain. The satnav is then out of sight and it would be necessary to nick the helmet first to get to the Touratech bracket.

Time to give this thread on tamperproofing your mount a seasonal bump maybe a 'mod' will sticky it on the forum door ?

Its a simple trick and effective. Those wanting the locking puck type, then its RAM-knob3L for B size 1" ball and not RAM-knob5L which is for the larger C size 1.5" ball and before the puns begin whether you've got a knob3L or knob5L, I also have a knob9L  as well
