Show time!
Assorted suggestions have come way, some very helpful, some biologically impossible and many an offence in most western countries.
Anyway, I suggest:
The Anchor, 34 Park Street, Bank End, Southwark, London SE1 9EF

Why, I hear you ask? Good question. Um, er.....
It's convenient for London Bridge tube and mainline, with its links to the Jubilee, Northern Line and Stratford.
It's easy for Waterloo and the Bakerloo line connection.
It's a decent size, without being a barn or a matchbox. The Market Porter where we went last time was great but we were bloody lucky with the weather, so could stand outside. Inside it gets heaving.
A very good choice of eateries*, all within 5 to 10 minutes walk, catering for assorted tastes. These include:
The Real Greek
Zizzi
Wagamama
Brew Wharf
A pizza joint (forget what it's called, it's a wine bar during the day)
A curry place (forget what it's called, we went there last time)
Gourmet Burger Kitchen
Fish!
Black & Blue
Roast (for those with an expense account

)
Tapas Brindisa
Pizza Express (different to the other one)
To name but twelve. I think the pub does food for the tourist trade, too. We don't all have to eat together or at all.
There is a Premier Inn right next door for anyone too tired and emotional to make the journey home.... or to 'Discuss Uganda' with that nice Japanese girl tourist, so interested in your big GS.....
Cheers,
Richard
*Well, it is London not Hartlepool, after all.
