London to Transfagarason loop

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so a video has to be worth a few more, surely??

This is a summary video of a 7,500km motorbike trip from London through Europe to Romainia via Timmelsjoch pass, the Alps and the Dolomites to ride the Transfagarasan Highway and then back via Croatia, Slovenia, Stelvio pass, the Black Forest in Germany and finally home.

I was chatting with one of the guys about doing the Transfagarason. It certainly looks good, was it worth it? Also, how long was your trip?

That depends what you are looking for - I don't like heights so for example Stelvio intimidates the cr@p out of me due to the insane drop offs. In stark contrast, the Transfagarason has these amazing twists and turns without the intimidating drop offs and then once you are over the highest point of the mountain, (if you are riding North to South) you then have this long stretch of nearly deserted road that descends slowly through the woods until you come out next to a huge dam / reservoir.

Was the actual road worth the long ride? Not sure.
Was the long ride worth it as an EPIC ride across Europe?? - absolfuckinglutely

Also, how long was your trip?

That's a trick question as it wasn't "just to ride the Transfagarason" - on the way back I stopped off in Split, Croatia for a week and flew in my wife and daughters to join me at the Ultra Music Festival so I was off the bike for a week. Duration of my actual trip was therefore just under a month but my buddy and I had planned our original trip as a "there and back" in just 2 weeks to ride the Transfagarason.

Riding approx 300miles per day and staying off motorways at all times translated into fairly long but highly enjoyable days. My only regret is not allocating enough time to be a tourist in Romainia - there are a number of castles of Vlad the Imapler that I would like to have seen which just means that one day I will be back .........

Thanks Manxxx. I like the idea of the EPIC ride due to the sense of adventure and something different from doing the Alps. It's a long way though, especially as I'm limited to ten days max! That makes it a two very long day or three less lengthy days slog just to get there

I've been to Romania once and you're right, if you're going all that way, you need to see some sights. I stayed in Sighisoara which is quite near the Trans. Beautiful place, and visited the Bran Castle near Brasov, also worth a visit if you go again.

I hope you don't get them mixed up with your " speshal content footage " ......

What editing software do you use, as I'm keen to mess around with the hours of footage I've got.....

I have been using "muvee" for years - it's bloody brilliant in that you don't have to know a damn thing about video editing - you throw it a couple of clips, a few photos and a song and then you pick a "theme" depending on the mood you want - it then does all the magic!!!

Once you get used to it, you can then dive under the covers to "cut sequences" or highlight "magic moments" to point out what stuff you really want to include or exclude - it means that you spend more time on your bike instead of in front of the computer!!

Only problem is that there is no Mac version so I have one windows laptop dedicated to running it. They have a free trial version on their site - well worth giving it a try. Let us know how you get on.

Yep - those are both places on my "regret I didn't see" list - I hear Brasov is a fantastic city and although Bran Castle is very tourist orientatated, that was also very high up on the list.

We did have a tourist day planned for Brasov but unfortunately, my riding buddy (Chisurz of this parish) mislaid his passport during a wet weather gear change while somewhere on the Transfagarason which required us to make an unplanned detour to Bucharest on a Friday before the embassy closed for the weekend. Trust me - Bucharest on a Friday afternoon is not somewhere you want to be riding a fully laden GS!!

So we have an "unfinished business" tour to plan in the future - this time we want to push on through to the Black Sea perhaps .......

I've been through that video now, very carefully, hoping I'd be able to see where I dropped that passport. It did mean a change route and (rather than splitting up...) meant that our return was restricted by the conditions of the temporary passport that I managed to get out of the British embassy in Bucharest. That is another story...

My timetable meant I did come back all the way to the UK within the two-week period. After delivering Maxxx to his family in (the rather aptly named) Split, I carried on south towards Dubrovnik to visit friends, then returned via Slovenia, Italy (a few more Dolomites), France (Petit St Bernard), eventually to Calais. My route took about 4700 miles...
