Hi Guys...............Anyone using Lone Rider Semi Rigid Bags on there GS/GSA. I would be grateful for any feedback, pro's and cons etc.
Cheers

Yeah, i got mine a few months ago and used them a bit on my GS (fitted the GSA pannier racks & pillion footpegs)

They fit well, look good and are easy to operate. The inner bags make it nice and easy to pack the bike/unpack when arriving at your destination.

Not found any down sides yet, but time will tell.

Yes it was the Lone Rider bags that were of real interest to me. I appreciate there are other bags out there and will do a good job, but Lone Rider took my fancy so to speak.

Might be worth seeing if there's anyone local who has them, to see them in the flesh

OK, here’s my take of my Lone rider experience so far.

I bought an over lander 48 bag, it took forever to arrive, but on arrival the quality appeared to be genuinely very high and worth the rather heavy price tag.

I’ve used it twice (damn lockdown/covid) and I have managed to break a couple of the male side buckles.

I have emailed Lone Rider and received a very prompt response asking for a picture (they apparently changed buckles around the time I received my bag).

I responded with a picture and got the following response

Hello Philip,

Unfortunately, we no longer stock those clips/straps. You would need to completely replace the bag at this time. We would offer you 25% off on a new replacement to help alleviate costs. Would this be interesting for you?

Best,

Anna

FFS….REALLY!!!

So 2 plastic clips, worth 50p maybe, have failed and their remedy is to offer a 25% discount on a new bag!!!

Suffice to say I am absolutely fuming, as far as customer service/product back up goes, I’d say they are absolutely awful.

The clips were obviously changed (my guess would be because the ones like mine were not up to the job) and they want me to pay £168.75 to get a new bag with the stronger clips on.

I don’t want a new bag, replacing the clips is a pain in the arse, but I am happy to replace them myself, but nope….spend a load more money is their response.

My advice would be to go in with your eyes wide open, they make a good product, but the back up is worse than terrible, which for the cost…..we’ll it’s just not acceptable.

I will not spend another penny with them if this is how they choose to treat their customers!

You could probably get matching clips aftermarket, it wouldn't be that hard...... I'm not sure why them telling you they have no replacements, and offering a 25% discount on a new bag is a problem. It's the only 'solution' they have as they have no replacement clips. You broke the clips. It's not as if they arrived damaged and you're having to buy a new bag.

I've bought plenty from them and have had nothing but good interactions, whether that be returns issues, faulty products or cancelling orders.

Cancellation - was a product showed ins tock but wasn't - cancelled off the order no problem, and even though it dropped my total below the free shipping threshold - not charged
Returns - got a dodgy padlock with the Motobags. A couple of emails back and forth and another was sent FOC
A bag i orders - duffle or Overlander was missing some straps. They were sent out and replaced without question.

If you think it’s acceptable for the clips to fail after 2 uses on a £225 piece of luggage then your expectations are somewhat lower than most people I’d guess.

Your attitude is exactly why shit companies with shit service manage to survive.

I don’t expect miracles, but I also would expect ‘adventure’ luggage to be a little bit stronger than 2 uses and then put it in the bin!

As I say, if you think it’s fine, then go ahead, but I think it’s important that poor service/back up is highlighted, especially when something is being sold at a premium price as a premium product.

Phil, it should be easy enough to find a local seamstress, cobbler or baggage repair place to fit improved clips for a lot less than a new bag.

I use “the tilehurst cobbler” near Reading (online and on Facebook) to fix my shoes/boots via mail order and I know he also repairs luggage/baggage and his prices and service are excellent.

If all else fails you could contact him ?

TBH I can replace the males myself, but I cannot find the same male clips, hence my request to Lone Rider.

My guess is they changed them because the first ones were poo!

It’ll be a ball ache to change the females though because of how they are sewn in and keeping the bag waterproof.

Shame as I really like the bag, but I’d not bother with their stuff again having had such a shit response over a bag that is pretty much brand new!

I didn't say it was acceptable to fail after that time period - more that its not a fault (IMO) of the product. I too have an Overlander, and have used it multiple times over the last 2 years without issue. My expectations are high of any product i buy, regardless of the cost.

You've no information to judge what you think my attitude is - i don't think there's any need for a personal snipe.

So you haven’t had a problem, lucky you.

I have and you’ve instantly dismissed it as user error, I quote ‘YOU broke the clips’ ……. yet it’s me having a personal snipe :blast it couldn’t be that the clips were faulty and broke prematurely (the fact that they have subsequently changed to an alternative clip suggests the first ones were not up the the job of a hardcore adventure luggage system (which is how it is promoted!).

It’s not a personal snipe, you actually state that you don’t see a problem with them asking me to pay £168 to sort out 2 clips that have failed prematurely!

A snipe would be to call you a prick, but I haven’t done that, merely pointed out that what you consider to be acceptable is setting a very low bar of expectation for what is a very expensive, supposedly quality bit of luggage.

See above for your snipes on my personal expectations and standards.

They are standard normal clips which can break through environmental reasons, user error and maybe even production issues (but i'd assume a re-call/new clips would be sent out if noted). As have mentioned (and why i brought in my own user experience using the same bag & fitting system) i've experienced no issues with build quality or customer service experience. I base that off multiple interactions - not one bad one. Multiple items on ym Bike & luggage is LR.

I do not see what resolution you want. You've said you have had the bag a while & not used it. Upon eventually using it the clips break & the company is unable to supply the clips due to a change in design.
Are you expecting them to send out a brand new bag and for you to swap an old one out? That would seem logical if the bag was not bought too long ago, but it appears it wasn't (timeline undetermined). Is it outside of the warranty on their products? I am not agreeing the cost of repair/replacement should be £168 for a new bag. But if outside of warranty/the bag is over a year old ......what should they do?

They continuously update and upgrade their products over time. Newer designs, materials & manufacturing methods develop - you only have to look at their MotoBags to see the continuous development they pour into their gear.

Yep I’ve got the Lone rider bags on my GS (GSA luggage racks fit onto my GS) - used them on a tour in South Africa. Very happy with them….

I’m in Surrey and not too far from you if you wish to view / check them out…

My preference is for them to replace the clips. If this isn’t an option, why?

When you change spec, any decent company would have a solution, one that doesn’t involve the customer forking out for a new product after it’s had negligible use.

Our company carries spares for products or has an alternative product that can be engineered to fit. They didn’t even offer to send me a set of new clips in the new design, a minimal cost to them, and whilst a major pain 8n the arse for me…..it’s a workable solution. Instead, I am expected to either spend a small fortune again on another bag (even though the one I have is like new except for 2 cheap plastic parts) or source my own clips.

It’s quite frankly a bit rubbish. The clips are an obvious weak point, they really should have designed it in such a way that they were replaceable easily.

However you cut it, it’s a pretty rubbish way of standing by your product.

For reference, here’s an example of a company I have dealt with that does stand by its product.

Cardo….ie Parma in the U.K. I phoned them to discuss a broken antennae on my wife’s packtalk. This was one of the very first Packtalks in the U.K., so I was well out of warranty and really was just after blagging an old broken unit to see if I could swap the antennae over. When I gave them the serial number they acknowledged it was a manufacturers defect which had been re-engineered, and they would swap the unit for one of the newer units. I had 2 other units of similar vintage……they swapped them all for brand new units!!!

The upside of the transaction for them is that all my friends and family have bought packtalks….probably 10 or more because of that service.

Thanks for the offer to view them, but I am down in West Wales, just a little too far from Surrey!!

And just so everyone understands the reason why they want me to spend a further £168……

The offending clip (looks standard, but can’t find it anywhere!).

Yes it was the Lone Rider bags that were of real interest to me. I appreciate there are other bags out there and will do a good job, but Lone Rider took my fancy so to speak.

I have found them to be good quality, well thought out, with useful features, such as a metal bar to run security straps through and a beaver tail with molle webbing. They are modular and other items can be added to increase storage. They've got the normal plethora of handles and carry straps etc. They are easy to get on and off the bike but you will need extra security to leave it unattended on the bike. I bought a wire cable and plastic coated padlock that would certainly deter any casual attention. I looked at the steel wire reinforced straps but read too many reviews about the locks being poor and hard to access. I wanted a large bag that had a top opener and haven't been disappointed. They have a semi-rigid liner which you can remove as you see fit. This came in handy on a recent trip as I was using a Kriega rucksack and it kept fouling the bag because the OEM mountings place the bag right up against the rider when across the pillion seat. I just took the liner out and squashed it down further. Sorted. The Overlander has a very useful air valve to release trapped air for when you are rolling the opening closed. They are 100% waterproof, which was tested on the road. They certainly look and feel as though they could survive an unscheduled trip down the tarmac but they ain't Mosko Moto. Before my next trip I will explore better mounting positions and different straps.

Is everyone missing something here. Can the company not repair these by putting on new clips? Or send you the new stronger male and female clips? Are they still under warranty? Remember Repair Replace Refund. JJH
