Lone Rider Moto tent, extra guying points.

Thanks for your replies chaps.
DJ123… I agree that this would be the best looking option and definitely needs some sort of reinforcement, but how could I attach some extra material to bolster the punched area. Would it be possible to glue in place maybe.

red rocket…Having looked closer at the pics you posted, I believe your tent is an earlier model to mine and has the middle pole guying points, which for some unknown reason were omitted from mine. I totally get the overtightening of the front causes zip issues, and how your mod works for your set up.
The trip risk could be halved by copying the LR guying method of one cord going to two points via a ring. Using the tarp clips would give adjustability as in, fitting the clip where it’s needed for that particular wind situation, but certainly for neatness the hole punch idea is the best. My LR tent won’t get used until WSB in July, when I’ll give the tarp clips a serious trial, and report back. (y)

For strength i would say either sewing - using large, strong thread to mate material on either side together. Or using a material that will bond together using heat/a vulcanising process.

Good quality tarp clips work really well. :thumb2 Better than putting holes in the pole sleeve.

Thanks Udders. The ones I got were just eBay cheapies to see if the general idea would work. Is there a better quality make that you’d recommend. I prefer the screw down clamp rather than the adjustable wedge type.

I can’t remember which ones I have. I’ll have a look when I get home later.

Righty ho, the two different types I have are the Lomo ones and some off eBay.
I bought two packs of the Lomo ones and can highly recommend them and they grip a tarp very well BUT for what you need you’re probably better off with the ebay ones because they have more of a gap where your pole will go. :thumb2

Thanks Udders, the eBay style ones are certainly best suited for the purpose intended, and are probably the ones I’ve already got. I noticed in your link there are some allegedly heavy duty and sold singly. I’ll get 4 of those and report back in July after Donington WSB.:)

An update on the guying additions to the LR Moto tent. I went with the ebay screw down type tarp clips, as one side is concave which fits around the pole perfectly. These all have a large split ring attached for easy cord attachment/removal. I've made up 4 guy ropes using some fluoro red 3mm Abma cord with fluoro green triangular adjusters. I'll no doubt use individual pegs for each guy line which will be fitted at right angles to the tent. If this doesn't work out to be stable enough, I can double the amount of guy ropes, at 45° to the front and back of the pole(4 each side), but hope what I've come up with will be good enough. Donington is only a few weeks away, so will soon know. Thanks for all of your input and suggestions.

As with any tent, you look at the tent, your planned usage and the cost then make your mind up as to the viability of your purchase.

I’ve just blown a fair wedge on a bell tent and have to ask myself why because I’ve got enough tents to tick all the boxes but never mind, I’ve never had a bell tent, I fancied having one and the price was right so I bought it.

Without a shadow of a doubt I’ve got better but there’ll be days when it makes sense and days when it doesn’t. Nobody will care, least of all me :D

As with anything, tents, sleeping bags, bike set-up, recipes.......
It's only tested when it's tested, it'll be good to know how it fares when stressed.

I just got a new LR Moto tent and it already has 6 guy lines. I think they’ve revised it.

You bought the £600+ heater / cooker for it yet? :D

Give it time. I have looked at wood burners for use in such tents and considered going full on survivalist next Xmas when my mother in law comes to stay. I reckon that I need to get the dogs and head for the hills with some fire lighters, homebrew and steak :D

They’ve obviously reverted to the original 6 guy line set up, so hopefully you won’t experience any of the problems I’ve had. I did query the deletion of the central guy lines with Lone Rider when I bought mine, and they just stated that the 4 line set up was good enough and that was that. Hope you enjoy your new tent.(y)

Or you have bought an old one.

Or the OP bought one that hadn’t been finished properly.

So many possibilities.

Just a quick update on my LR Moto centre pole mod. Admittedly there were no storms, but came through both 4 day weekends at Donington and Brands Hatch with no issues, so quite happy with my effort, and will use in future.
There was a fellow LR Moto tent user at Donington from Germany, with a brand new tent with only 4 guy ropes. He was keen to make a similar mod to mine to aid stability.

As I understand it now, if you request the 6 guy version now when ordering they will send that. Otherwise they’ll send the 4 line version.

Still on the subject of the Lone Rider Moto tent. Has anyone considered getting guying points added, especially to the middle pole section, so that it can be guyed out to the side. Was at Brands Hatch for a very windy weekend, and because of the wind shift, the middle pole section kept collapsing inwards. No damage just annoying and looked quite alarming. I believe the earlier model of this tent had the ability to be guyed from the middle but this feature deleted from the current(2022) model. Any thoughts, suggestions or bodges, all gratefully received.

This same thing bothered me, having bought the Moto tent in last year's black friday sale. I contacted Lone Rider and they very kindly sent me the 6 guy-line version, which has the additional lines on the centre but I believe is offered on request when you purchase. If you don't mention it I would expect you'll get the 4 line version. Personally I can't see why they went from 6 lines to 4 especially on a tent this size. Incidentally there were several 4-line versions at the ABR which was pretty windy at times, and they seemed to be doing just fine. I think if you tension it out just right they are stable. I would however suggest contacting Lone Rider especially if you bought yours during the last 12 months, and ask about this.

Hi,
I’ve had mine a few years now. When I bought it I queried only 4 guy lines with Lone Rider, as the YouTube reviews I’d followed showed 6. Their reply was quite short, it’s 4 now and that’s quite adequate. It’s when the wind shifts to the side is the problem. If you guy them out too tightly, there’ll be a problem rezipping the door once opened. I’d happily return my tent outer shell to swap for the 6 guy option, but can’t see that happening. My mod/bodge does seem to work ok, but shouldn’t be necessary on a tent in that price range.
