I've got a KTM 990 Adventure at present which I'm looking to part exchange for an F800 GS. My question is this. What are the main differences between the standard F800 GS and the adventure?

I want rid of the KTM as on a recent trip it needing filling up every 125 miles which became a real pain. How many miles can you get from a full tank on a standard F800 GS?

Any advice appreciated.

I did look at the BMW main page but in all honesty I didn't find it to be much help. I'd sooner get some first hand advice from those who own the F800 etc...

279 miles from full tank to pushing

Otherwise 112,000 miles on mine, no rust, no corrosion, no issues .... just happy mile' smiles :thumb

Clocked at 129 mph on der Nürburgring, does everything I want a motorcycle to do :D

Thanks Micky. 279 miles is bliss compared to what my 990 does. My local dealer has 2 bikes in which I'm going to have a look at on Saturday all being well.

This'll give you a direct comparison on all the major differences - simples :thumb

A lot more info than anyone on here will be able to post.

I have a f800gsa. I have posted here the fuel consumption figures I have optaned. 57 mpg mainly on motorway riding. On what you would call B roads over 60 is possible. I have done a very worthwhile mod change the front sprocket from 16 to 17 teeth. Quietns everything down. Don't have fuel figures yet. It's higher wider bigger tank actual 27 litres 340 mile real world range. Travel edition comes with boxes centre stand fogs. Drawbacks tube tyres. I love mine. Only bike I'd change it for is a 1200 GSA JJH

Now don't be going and relying on that .... but 200 miles is certainly a useable and realistic figure :thumb

60+mpg easily available even with spirited riding

25k to 35k from DID gold professional chains and BMW sprockets

74k out of original front pads

Only downside is 4k to 5k out of Tourance rear tyres :D

Aah ok cheers for that Al. I think I need to subscribe to see that thread so I'll sort that out shortly. You're in Coventry too then like me?

Just a thought; ... the standard bike has an incredibly poor seat , the BMW comfort one (imho) isn't a great deal better!
If I were you, I'd look closely at the GS(A) since it has a reportedly fantastic seat and better wind protection.

Half the pleasure from owning these bikes is from long rides, so the seat and wind protection become huge factors after you buy.
I'm asking you to make them a priority before you buy !

By the way, the standard bike is so economical (even when ridden hard) I think the range from the tank is absolutely fine. My own need for a stretch/pee/coffee/eats means a stop is needed when there is plenty of range left.

125 miles on the KTM sounds ridiculous , I wonder if there was something wrong with it ?

Thanks Stuart. I think the standard F800 should suit my needs. Thanks for the advice so I'll take those points you have mentioned on board.

From what I read on the KTM forums the fuel has always been a hot topic of discussion.

I'm doing twenty five miles each way daily, and it's doing 61-62mpg tank after tank. Usually refill when it shows about 10-15 lwft on trip computer, so that's giving 200-215 between refills.

I had the same dilemma a few months ago.

I bought a F800GS and intend going to South America on it.

I am so impressed with the bike Inhave sold by 'new' LC GSA ( advert on this site)

F800 GSA is heavier and seat height higher than the std F800GS and at 70mph has no power . I had one a few years ago and sold it within a month as in my opinion the better option was the R1200 GS.

I have made some major changes to my F800GS but that is me and is not totally necessary.

Sargant seat is good
Tubeless wheels are possible but expensive -Alpina or Kineo

I would go for the std F800GS - you will not be disappointed

F800GS

I have had my GS, not the GSa for four years a great bit of kit, its done everything I have asked but never been off road.

The downsides are

Crap seat, the BMW comfort seat is better but after market such as sergeant are much better.

Crap lights, replace with HID kit from Les Wassall who is on here

Mine has gone a bit rusty, should have paid more attention with ACF50

Mine has had replacement head race bearings under warranty and will need another set soon

Upsides are

Does everything you can want

Great fuel range

Great riding position

Light and manoeuvrable

Best mods

HiD kit from Les Wassall

Aftermarket seat

Scottoiler

In October - April fit Tucano muffs

When its time to change the chain, get a DiD not a cheaper one

ARD cases from http://ardcases.co.uk

Touratech tankbag

Akrapovic end can

I have bought many items on here as they have come up.

Hope you have at least half as much enjoyment as I have had with mine.

Hi! I'm not sure what mpg the gsa does but I've been riding GS ( not for long -only 3 months ) and I'm impressed- I've never trusted computers etc so always relied on facts and experience. Facts are: my Dakar - over 3 years of riding averaged 4.2l/100km - mixed commuting - country roars/motorway/town .... Bigger brother (800gs) returns 4.4-4.5l/100km ;) I'm happy with that .
