I'm seriously thinking about buying a used R1200GS i'v got about £8k to play with and need to seek advice from any old hands with ref to how higher miles affects the bike. On a commute to work i can do 100 miles round trip and as such easily rack up the miles. I'v seen a few 20k(ish) bikes up for sale, at about the same amount i'v got to spend but worry that it will drop value like a stone with a few more thousand miles on the clock. Does anyone have any experience of high milage and how it affects value, the general drive of the bike ect. I'm new to BMW and open to any thoughts. Many thanks Chris.

Despite what the brochures and the globe crossing image try to sell you; BMW used prices are harmed by high mileage.

But, dont let that put you off piling it on and enjoying the bike!

Pound for mile - you'll get your money and enjoyment out of the bike.

The boxer engine doesnt even get its full legs until its into 10,000 miles plus, and at 25,000, 50,000 and up its still an amazing beast! I rode Steptoes 100,000 mile loan R1100GS a while back, and it felt every bit as eager to please as my old 50,000 mile 1150GS!

Have fun, and enjoy the ride along the way.

Mike

Hi,welcome to the forum.
BWM engines can do car-style mileages with no problems as long as they are maintained properly.
There's no real need to spend 8K just on a commuter. You can get a decent 1150 from about 3.5K and there are plenty about.
Take a look in the for sale/wanted section and you will see what i mean.
For 8K,you can get a year old 1200 with low miles.
Good luck on whatever you choose.:beerjug:

Subscribe to the site and you will get a nice one from this very forum with that amount of money to spend .:thumb

There are pre-registered R1200GS's from around 8400 in MCN. Maybe a little extra haggling will bring them down?

Re Looking for advice

Many thanks for the above words of wisdom, i should have said i was after a fully spec'd up GS hence the limit on the budget but not just for commuting. I'v seen one or two on the for sale forum that look nice but slightly high on the mileage but after the above replies i could be making some enq's, i'll have to register to the site.
Once again many thanks more the merrier
Cheers Chris

Why spend 8k when you can buy mine for 6.5k? :augie

Looking for yet more advice!!

Has anyone fixed or sorted out the problem of paint starting to bubble on the front engine plate on a 1200gs. I contacted a local dealer who quoted about £400 and 3 hours work to correct the problem. With my lack of info on these bikes is this a common problem? and is it worth spending £400 to sort out or just rub it down and get the hammerite out and worry about it when i come to sell it many years down the line.
I'v ordered a fender extender to hopefully reduce the amount of gloop hitting the engine.
While i'm here is anyone using or got knowledge of a Schuberth R1 i'v been offered one for £255 (from a shop) in matt black this seems a good deal!
Many thanks Chris

Hi Chris, you may get more response if you post your questions in the various other sections rather than here... such as Equipment and toys for the helmet and the 1200 technical section for the paint issue ;)

Cheers Bryn :beerjug:

For the kind of money you are looking to spend, you should expect near showroom condition and a decent warranty.
From what others have posted, the corrosion should be covered by the warranty.
Have you got a link to the dealer/bike you are looking at?.

Hiya CJB,
Look at Vines of Guildford, they have loads of 2nd hands.
Ask to speak to Luke Kwok. Should get a low mileage '06 model at least. Warranty too!!! :augie

If you can't get hold of Luke, wait 'till you can.
He is the man!!! :clap:clap:clap
Both Pt3010 and I have had fantastic deals from him. We live 100 miles from Vines!!

Hi to the service staff, I know you watch the site!!!! :o:o:o:o

Ref Looking for more advice

Thanks for the above replies, I'll post this in the tec section. I'v put a deposit on a bike from Vines in Guildford but its out of its 2yr warranty period and they would only pay half of the amount to fix the problem, as such i took a good deal on the price hence the general enquiry. Its not a massive problem and the bike had a good spec for the price.
Thanks once again. Chris

My 25,000 mile 1200GS looks like new (if cleaned regularly the finish lasts remarkably well) and I can't detect any significant difference in the way it rides compared to when it was new - maybe it just about feels run in now.

No idea what it's worth - not bothered as it doesn't feel the slightest bit tired so I will keep it for another couple of years before replacing it.

P.S. - just make sure that it doesn't have the tell-tale oily black line between the engine and gearbox - if it does get that fixed before you hand over any money.

Re Looking for advice

Strange you should mention Luke he sold me the bike seems like a decent fella. Its got the usual dealer package so i would assume any problems will be sorted prior to delivery (slapping my very bald block of wood).
Cant wait to start riding its been a wee while what with chemo and various treatments over this past year, now i just want to pull on a lid (when i buy a new one) and get out their and try to remember all i'v forgotten which is very little.
Many thanks once again Chris
