Hey compadres,

I've got a F650GS with side stand only.

Knowing what the future holds with maintaining my baby (the soon to be SWMBO's baby), I'm looking for a cheap, safe and not too much of a kerfuffle way to put the bike in an upright position for maintenance. This could possibly at some stage include Engine and/or wheel removal type things.

Now that may well be just buy a BMW centre stand, but I was wondering if there is another recommended product or way to do this type of work.

I have a flat surface in the garage, so that's a good start.

Many thanks

Buy a second hand stand from the usual suspects I did happen to notice this when I was on browsing last night

It was about haflway down this page LINKY

It may suit your other half to be sitting a bit lower??? If not they may have a second hand centre stand it's one the left under their badge click on used parts then F650 etc etc (stands are usually in the frame section)

Cool, I like the idea of a Moto-X stand.

Like the idea of adding a 2nd hand centre stand also. I wonder if the frame has the location points if the bike originally did not have a stand as standard fitment.

The frame will have location points (mine has).

If it's a daker than you need a longer stand as they sit higher than a standard GS.

MOTORCYCLE LIFT, BIKE LIFT, MOTORCYCLE JACK, BIKE JACK
ebay Item number: 140198296521
cracking bit of kit, well made, and good service from seller.

get the centre stand.

one day in the distant future, far away from home without your jack you will need to oil the chain. :D

tis a pain in the arse to oil a bit of the chain, roll the bike forwards do the next bit and so on. Much much easier to put the bike on the centre stand and do it the easy way. Plus you can remove the wheels easily with just the centre stand :thumb2

Must admit I am leaning this way. I don't really want yet more stuff cluttering up my garage.

Just a bit concerned how to fit the ruddy thing, should be easy but I'll be jiggered if I can find the location points under the frame. Time to check the workshop manual for hints.

see the little round black bit just infront of the rear suspension linkage and almost directly underneath the swingarm pivot bolt, that is the stand mount. The little black bungs pop out. Don't know how difficult it is to fit a stand to a gs, was an absolute bastid on the dakar :D

If your still not sure post up a pic of your bike and we'll see if we can spot the mounts

Yet another question.

The parts catalogue list two differnt types of centre stand as below:

FOR VEHICLES WITH
LOWERING = NO CENTER STAND X499A=NO 46527669895 +core

FOR VEHICLES WITH
LOWERING CENTER STAND X499A=YES 46527686769 +core

Being a numpty I have no idea of the difference or how to check which one I need.

What's "X499A" and what's "core"?

Helpppppppp

was a little mistified as to why you didnt already have the centre stand , as they were a standard fitment to the 650 gs (not dakar) but i see the bike was from bmw riding school ,or whatever its callled

anyway this earlier thread http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130790 if you look at the motorworks link it shows the component parts you will need .

cheers mike

that's to do with a factory lowered gs rear suspension, i assume yours is a standard height one.

if it is you'll need these parts :D

1)46527669895 center stand 1
1)46527686769 center stand 1
(one of those is for a lowered bike, i think. Best ask the dealer) :nenau

2)46527650721 tension spring 2 off
3)07119900145 hex bolt (M10X50) 2 off
4)46527652164 sleeve 2 off
5)07119931020 flat washer (A10,5) 4 off
6)07129964676 self-locking hex nut (M10) 2 off

hope that helps :thumb2

edit, michael beat me to it. At least you know how many of each part you'll need :D

Ace advice, I love forums,

cheers guys, think I have it sorted. I'm a 30" inside leg and can get both feet down on toes only, If it was the lowered setup I'd have thought I could get both down flatter.

No problem pip :thumb2

Something must have changed on the twin sparks,it was a piece of cake on my '02:augie

Tony

:nenau All i know is that mine was a bastid to do. After much swearing and the employment of a bfh it went on. :D

Well I got the parts and fitted in a matter of 30 mins. Best to loosely fit nearside with springs attached at both ends, then with the help of a boot and a rubber mallet, tap the offside into place and tap bolt through, then pull the whole lot together with ratchet and spanner. No probs.

Strange that the sidestand and centre stand intefer with each other, You have to open sidestand to get the centre stand down.
