Hi Ferret,
Ive only seen 1 anniversary bike & it was white so was`nt expecting a black one. Yeah, it does`nt look bad bar the front of the engine & it`s got some nice kit with it. I`m going to see one tomorrow in my preferred colour of white (Silver is the other but hey ho).

Thanks for photo`s & i could be interested in it but depends on tomorrow :)

The white ones are the 25th anniversary bikes, good luck tommorow.

To go back to servicing schedules, as the owner from new of an '07 bike with close to 90,000 miles on the clock, and self-serviced after the 2 year warranty was up, my schedule has been:

6k/Year 1 Oil and filter, valve clearances if I have time, general once over and clean up of the brake calipers.
12k/ Year 2 As above plus definitely check/adjust valves, gearbox and final drive oil changed. Brake fluid changed.
18k/Year 3 Same as 6k service
24k/Year4 Same as 12k service plus new alternator belt, plugs and air filter.

Avoid jet-washing the bike as water can get up into the alternator with disastrous consequences. IMHO these bikes don't like standing unused for long periods so try and get out regularly, even if for just a short ride.
Enjoy your GS, they are great bikes.

Thanks for the info Watty,
Especially about the jet wash/Alternator part as i`ve read on here it`s an engine out job? to replace it.
Cheers

Its a car type alternator on the pre-watercooled bikes, it sits on top of the engine so no need to remove or strip the engine. Not an especially difficult job to change, just that they aren't a cheap component to buy!

Ahhh,
Once again, cheers Watty. One i read about was obviously a later model & 1.1k to sort in a shop:eek:. Maybe there was other job`s too but even so:eek::)

Well chaps,
Went to see the GS & errr a bit scruffy but not bad over all BUT they`ve lost the service history......yeah that`s what i said:rolleyes::blagblah

And.... its a 15 year old tractor, is not going to be a garage queen minter

Get the mileage, get it to a proper BMW indie , and say full service , assuming everything has been missed to date

It may cost a bit, but then you know you have a good bike (potentially) ;)

I disagree, there’s loads out there you just have to be patient. I bought a 17 year old minter with 35,000 miles last year. Private sale off this forum and the previous owner had looked after a bike exactly the way I would. You will find one just take your time.

Plenty of well looked after bikes around, you don't need to spend your hard earned cash on one with no history etc. Don't settle.

I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage though, mine has just gone over 66k and runs sweet as. Though it was pretty reassuring when I bought it that it came with a full folder of history with many, many stamps. 😁 Mine is an 08 which I would definitely reccomend if you can't find a decent twin cam.

Hey excellent choice.
Got a 2012 R1200GS non adventure and I'm quite happy. Price seemed ok with service history... The one in this post looks lovely. Good luck with your quest.

The guy did say if he cant find the history he`d wipe a grand off it! One of those day`s when i did`nt have a lot of time, the bike was reet at the back of the shop so 30mins to get at it etc so i left it for now. Work & life have now to took over again. I`ll see if it`s there when i have time to judge it properly. The discount would certainly pay for a major health check & service though.

Cheers gents!

Hi Ferret. What bashplate is fitted, I’m after a slightly more robust one than the original. I am new to BMW and bought an official BMW enduro bashplate but it’s for a water cooled model. Doh! 😣

It was fitted with the standard adventure alloy baseplate and a cymarc crud catcher.

I agree with you about not having lots of electronic gadgets. I have a single cam 2009 GS. I bought it when it was 3 years old and had 2,300 miles, it now has 92,000. I have self serviced it since I got it, it's an easy bike to work on.

If I was replacing it I would go for a twin cam 2010 to 2013. I think that a lot of the known problems had been sorted by then.

I have had the normal problems with it, Fuel strip (which was changed to a float from 2010), Shock seal leaking (can be rebuilt with decent seals) alternator seized, heated grips stopped working. I still think that the GS is the best all round bike that I have ever owned, (been riding for 50 years with lots of bikes), I have toured europe on it, I have done daily all year round commutes of 60 miles for years on it, and I've had loads of ride outs, I.O.M. trips (even did the mountain section on it!).

Take your time and you will find just the right one for you. As others have said they don't like standing for ages so get out and ride it regularly and never use a jet washer on it.
Good luck.
