Looking for a small petrol/oil container for 2012 1200 GS

Is anyone aware of a vendor for a petrol/oil/ canister or tool box that can be fitted to the brackets in the area just below the petrol tank as pictured? Its probably no bigger than 1 litre but none the less could be useful.

I think the US market uses this space/bracket to fit an emissions control box or a C02 canister ?

Will be following this thread......my 08 GSA has what looking like a bottle shaped space on the inside of the fuel tank.....Ive searched everywhere to find out what fits or should be in there.

You didn't look far enough, its common knowledge that the space inside the GSA tank is there to accommodate a charcoal emissions canister on US models. Threads about it are on this site somewhere.

Nippy Normans sold an expensive bottle complete with strap, other folk chose to source a suitable plastic bottle elsewhere and make their own retaining strap.

Blimey, how much fuel do you think you'll carry in that space? 500ml, if you are lucky.

Any old plastic bottle will do, providing it doesn't leak. Some bods swear by an old Scottoiler bottle. A bit of stretchy rubber strap to hold it in place and the job's done. Whether you'll then actually ever use it is another matter, but you never know.
 
As Richard suggested, I will swear by the Scottoiler bottle and old rubber strap and two 6mm (I think) screws. Mind you never had fuel in there just oil.
 
Hmmm good idea - got my 500ml of oil in my top box (in a bottle BTW).

After Japanese and Austrian bikes it seems strange to have to carry spare oil...BMW must know they need some, why don't they have a proper storage area thingy (optional extra)...probably don't want to admit it do they?

(I didn't even have to do that for my moped in the 70's (SS50 four stroke))
 
Decathlon or aldis or any cycle shop.....aluminium water bottle for about 3 quid.

If you want to take fuel in it, you do need a fuel rated one (or the rubber seal will melt) but they're only about a tenner :thumb
 
What distance do you ride that you need to carry oil in a container ?

FFS what is it with GS riders, get a grip. Garages all over the world sell oil in all sizes of containers if you need oil in an emergency.

I've done a few door to door rides of 4500 miles in 8 days and never felt the need to carry extra oil.
 
Mine does 300 mikes a week but oil has never needed topping up even the recent hot weather hasn't dropped the oil level.

As for the tank space - a 1 litre aluminium water bottle will fit (apparently). Then get a suitable 0 ring from a parts factors. If the fuel strip fails it could come in handy.

But a larger container behind the RHS pannier frame would be more useful. 10 miles on one litre probably not enough if it runs dry in the m-way or out in the sticks.

My last bike had a 22 litre tank, useless fuel gauge and a low fuel warning that lit too soon but I never ran out over the 6 years I owned it.

Well carrying oil is not what i want to do, but touring two for a few days. . .I needed oil.

About 500 ml per 1000 miles. :eek: it was pita finding some too. So i just keep some on board now. Simples.
 
I had an 1150 that used oil. 1200 does not.

As Wapping points out check oil when filling with petrol. No need to carry extra.

Or even a puncture repair kit ..... :augie
 
The petrol tank pocket would be a handy place to put a tool container. A 1 litre bottle with large diameter lid would do the job.

It would be more hassle to get at than under the seat, but how often are the tools ever needed? Stuff the bottle with rags so they don't rattle.
