Hi I have a R1200GS adv I am going on holiday on the bike next Thursday. Spain and France. Went out today and the bike performed fabulously. But on the way home a couple of us decided to go off road I only had road tyres on. I got the front wheel stuck on some large rocks, After rocking and reving a lot it worked free but there was plenty of smoke and the clutch was burning. The burning smell lasted a few hours but the bike went fine all the way home 90 miles no problems exept the smell. Could anybody give me advice if I have done any permanent damage or should it be O.K. Many thanks from one worried GSer DONT WANT TO MISS HOLIDAY.

If you pull off the starter motor, you can see the clutch and measure it.
I would say that you are unlikely to cook it in one shot.
Try giving it the berries up a good hill and see if the clutch slips.

Whats the mileage?

Don't forget it is a dry clutch, and like all modern dry clutch, has no asbestos content. Asbestos was used to dissipate heat, and stop clutches overheating when you slipped them.

As the last reply said, get it hot, then acc hard in top, preferably up a hill, if it's OK i personally wouldn't worry.

I have experienced this a few times on the GS, even just pulling away uphill can sometimes make the clutch 'smell'.

Just make sure you have good breakdown cover!!

Enjoy the trip :thumb

Stelvio pass last year ... 1150 Clutch stank for around 2 hours.. never seemed to do it any long term harm :thumb
