Looking for new longer leather jacket.....??

So, in the "old days"...... Pre-2012, before the cancer diagnosis and the sudden limitations thereafter, I used to gather two or three similar riding friends and excuse ourselves by saying that the Route To Appecross needed to be "checked" ahead of the big ride.
In other words, mid-April, we would rendezvous in Crieff and ride up and back on the same day.
No real problems with the distance, about 450 round-trip and lunch at Applecross is/ was a MUST!

So, you have got to come! Rather hoping that a couple I know near Lisburn will be there this year. What shall I tell them? To look out for you?

Saw the Dainese jacket but honestly, the pleated pockets worry me somewhat. Look good but they will bellow out and will soak up any rain if caught in it.
 
I'd been looking for one of the Hein Gericke TFL Cool leather jackets for ages and eventually found an as new one for £70 on Gumtree in Norwich. I got a friend who comes from Norwich and works in Aberdeen to collect it and bring it up on one if his weekends down there. I think the reason it as "as new" was because the leather's so thick it could be very difficult to break in. I consulted a chemical engineer friend who has designed and prototyped a range of motorcycle clothing about using a leather treatment but he reckoned it might compromise the TFL coating. He suggested bunging the jacket in the tumble drier on a low setting with something heavy to bash it about a bit and it worked. However, although it was the correct size 52 for me, the sleeves were much too long so I got the local seamstress to shorten them; although, in fact, she tells me that she farmed out the job to the local saddler who did an excellent job. It didn't come with armour but I invested in some D3O armour for back, shoulder and elbows. With the alteration and armour, it stands me at about £170.

Having worn the jacket on the bike, it's incredibly comfortable and with six vents on the chest and sleeves and one big one across the shoulder blades on the back, it's nice and cool on a warm day.
I'm sure there'll be more out there if you keep looking.

Bowser, - to be honest, despite years of textile jackets and even a one-piece Olympia Phantom suit which is invaluable, the leather jacket is for use on a specific bike. Rather dated, rather quaint itself but the very best long-distance bike I have ever owned.

Are you going to be able to make it North for The Applecross Run.....April 25-26? If so, you might be the furthest ever rider? Unless the IAM Instructor heads up from London....

Will you make it to Applecross? You are about what - 80-100 miles South of Edinburgh? Friend and one of the original CHAS-Riders - who rode with the Duo in South Africa on the Long Way Down, used to live near Penicuik. Think his homeward journey from Applecross direct to Penicuik was about 5.5 hours.
Suppose it will depend on how bad the A68 is for speed cameras....?

well google recons 551 miles and 10 hour trip obviously thats non stop. I have a day at work on Friday, then back for Monday morning, not sure is the anwser, now if I can get Friday off!!!!

Okay, right, well......I wasn't sure where you are. 551 miles might make it difficult in a weekend but you will certainly be most welcome if you choose to come.
Coincidentally, I jokingly invited a friend in the US and unbelievably, he's looking into flying over and riding up with us....
 
If I have the time for the trip, be there like a shot, havent been back to that part of the world since I lived in Dalgety, and used to go to Fort William for holidays.
 
That Longer Jacket.....

Whoever suggested it......thanks. Got the one off eBay but will await it's arrival before stopping my quest. The AJS Biker one WAS €299 until close of eBay auction, then suddenly jumped to €349......dammit. Maybe an omen but still think that the Speedware H-G jacket will need armour.
