Wifey has a new MacBook Air and we need to move about 14GB of documents and photos from the windows pc to the MacBook - we really haven’t got a clue (we have read a lot of stuff on Apple Support). We have an iCloud+ subscription. Any advice or guidance greatly appreciated.

Doesn’t the new Mac come with migration assistant ?

14GB isn't so much these days. Drop them on a memory stick, swap it over to the Mac and wait. I suggest a USB 3 memory stick.

I'd avoid iCloud (for now) to be fair as it is a mess, and the login/user management is painful on the Mac side, I don't want to imagine what it would be (not sure it is even possible, maybe via web) to try and access that via Windows.

If the documents are "free" and not tied to specific app or kept in monolithic libraries, as suggested above, move everything on an external USB drive or stick and then manually copy on the Mac.

I think MacOS has a Windows migration instrument.

Update: yes, you can do directly via Migration Assistant. See here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/102565
I've never used Migration Assistant across operating systems, so no idea if it works well, etc.

Are the pc files stored on Microsoft oneDrive (i.e. the cloud storage), if so you can run oneDrive on Mac and therefore you don't need to move anything anywhere. Unless you want to get them into iCloud so accessible on associated iphone.

Yes it does. Somehow we have managed to get the windows end of the app to get the pc to lock up - I need to look at it again tomorrow.

I always found doing it this way is always troublesome. Best and simplest way is what I said.

Very odd
Last month I migrated a windows 11 laptop to a MacBook Pro. Worked well if a bit slow.

14GB is not so much. We find the file management is tricky - as I say we haven’t got much idea when it come to Mac

Not sure about One Drive but maybe, need to have a closer look tomorrow.

Once you get to know it it's much better. I find Mac's stay up to date longer.

I use a dual boot with bootcamp to have the Windows option when I need it. But still go back to Mac for my main use.

All you really need to do with the files is block select and drag and drop onto the USB device. then do the same from the USB to Mac. Just takes time.

I’m a Mac and Windows user, live just south of Domme. if you are still having issues on Thursday, I will be pottering about in the Dordogne if you need any help. Colin

Yep, if you are moving those type of files and they are kept in folders in the filesystem (ie: you can see/reach them), just copy them manually and carry them over on the Mac.

Easy.

Or use a gmail account, it comes with 15GB free storage. Copy the files on the Windows PC to Google Drive, then login in to Chrome on the MacBook and Google Drive will be there, download the files to where you want them on the MacBook.
