Hi
I am thinking about getting a helmet cam, nothing to flash (or pricey).
Needs to be easy to turn on and off on the move, no cables and fits to helmet by means other than a strap as it will block my chin vents.

Any recommendations?

What sort of price did you have in mind?

Try the Veho Muvi if you want a decent basic videocamera for under £100 :thumb2

I have an Oregon ATK3000 which I used on my recent BMW off road school jaunt in south wales.
Nice bit of kit, but I don't need it now.(got a bullet cam fitted to my bike) would be open to offers

Tachyon XC. small, simple camera built around a decent lens. No wires, waterproof and just an on/off switch. Picture quality is really good. Paid £110 at the Ally Pally show.

The only problem with some of these cameras is the lack of a screen to help you set up shots. If you only ever want to do shots from your POV then its fine, but this video lark is addictive. Once you start doing it, you will want to get a bit more creative, try funky angles, in fact put together proper videos of your ride including music...

I borrowed an oregon headcam off a mate and it was a simple affair with one button to record. I tried it on my helmet, then on the clocks looking back at me, then on the frame looking forwards etc. I couldnt check out the footage until I got home, only to then find that part of the frame obscured part of one shot, I had just clipped the top of my helmet on the shot looking back at me.....you get the general idea. :(

I ended out going out and buying a bullet camera from dogcamsport.co.uk. It wasnt cheap though, costing me about £250 with a DVR (digital video recorder). I have since replaced the DVR with a small camcorder that the bullet cam plugs into. It is a pain having cables and things to worry about, but I can set up every shot using the screen on the camcorder, then just hit record, pop the camcorder in my tailpack or backpack and just crack on.

It all depends on what you want to do. I just know that I could have bought a £100 pound jobbie, but I would have soon got annoyed with the limitations of it and inevitably traded up. I am a photographer though, so that kinda explains things (plus I am a geek and love shiny new toys) :thumb

Tachyon xc mini

Check out my spanish biking video on the bottom of the post, once set up, just velcro it on the same place on yer lid, sorted, one button on and off, and the quaity isnt bad for £120 nicker, you'll need an micro sdhc class 6 card for the camera too, but i didnt want to spend loads on something which might get killed in a spill.
its not hd, but playing it on a pc wired into the telly, you can use div x player for free and it will blow up full screen, its not brill, but perfectly watchable, just like normal tv really.
It just works, i had about 4 hrs vid on a 16 gig card nd still had room to spare, waterproof too, you wash it under the tap(with the door closed)
this gets my vote anyway.ttfn P

Horse,

Great video and of course the backing track from ACDC was a nice treat. Really liked the quality of the video. Any chance you could post a picture of the way you've set it all up on your bike helmet ? In terms of it being attched to your lid, does it feel like you have something stuck to the side of your head and is it intrusive when you're on-the-move.
